Question about 2001 Honda VF 750 C Magna

1 Answer

Engine tapping The engine gets a tapping sound once it's warmed up. Slight acceleration or increase in idle and it's gone. Doesn't matter if it's in neutral or not. Theres no power loss that I can feel and I believe it's a very strong bike for it's size. Bike only has 6000 miles on it. It had this issue when I purchased it with only 1800 miles on it. Could this be a valve or chain tensioner issue? Or is it just the way these engines run?

Low oil pressure at low rpm's Not enough pressure will cause hydrolic lifter or tensioners to get "lazy" incorrect oil type, synthetic oil and pump gear tollerances will cause these symtoms

Yes, it is normal for a vehicles idle to be high when first starting up, no mater what the temp. If it`s already warmed up to operating temp, it will still have a high idle for a brief moment when starting. Usually this is the IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor. Located in the air duct down from the air filter, and before the throttle body.

Main proplems from IAT sensors are to low of an idle at normal temp, or the idle never comes down after warm up.

Your gas milage problems would stem from Oxygen sensors, plugs, wires, timing, etc...

Here is a quick test, just incase your OBD II (Computer, PCM..) memory module is not working properly. With the engine running, using the tips of your fingers, tap on the PCM, if the engine stumbles or stalls and sends troubles codes that light up your check engine light while tapping, if it does, check to make sure all wires are securely attached to it.

Noise from engine

Check your belt. Belts will whine when they're worn, cracked or glazed. I hope this was helpful. It's not normal. Take care and God bless.

Knock or tapping at idle

Firstly, check your engine oil level. If the level is low, the rocker arms in the cylinder heads can tap tap tap... This may be why you're getting an engine light. Check the oil pressure gauge for a reading. If the oil pressure and level is ok, you can run an oil cleaning agent thru your motor with the oil and then do an oil change. Sometimes you can quiet a noisy motor that way.
You could also use a high-mile oil in the motor and see how that works. You can also add an oil additive to help quiet older motors..
hope this helps you.

Look for a possible vacuum leak Use can of carburettor cleaner carefuly sprayed around inlet manifold and around injector seals.Spray with engine running and engine will instantly react to any leak no matter how small.Dont allow fan to blow onto paint as carb cleaner will damage it.
