I had a problem like that on my Suzuki 750 GSXR, on mine it was a broken gearweel who was broken, i dont know if thats the problem on your bike, but it sure souds like that.

I had to get down the gearbox and replace the broken weel.

It took me a long time and it was damn expensive.

I was also stucked on first gear and it was imposible to change gear.

Try rocking it back and forth slightly, not to cause too much movement, just enough to possibly get it out of first gear. Make sure your clutch cable is working properly too. This is what allows your gears to shift.
Hope that helps.

SOURCE: i have a yamaha xj

Sounds like a badly bent shift fork. Parts will be hard to find. Finding a dealer willing to work on a 30 year old bike will be even harder. The cost to repair would be around $1250. That is more than the bike is worth. I don't advise you to attempt the repair yourself. Some special tools are needed and you would be doing major surgery on the transmission.

Drain is on the bottom of the drive shaft. Fill is on the side of the drive shaft. Fill the shaft drive assembly to the bottom of the threads of the fill hole. Takes about 200-300ml.

Stuck in first gear 1982 650 turb seca

Hi, Toyroy for this situation I would call my local dealer or reputable shop's service/parts department and inquire about any possible quick fix, answers, or parts inquiry. If necessary, transport your bike to the dealer or shop and have a professional technician take it for a test drive, if it is in running condition, and give you a written estimate of repairs and answer any specific questions you may have about your problem. 1981 Yamaha XJ 650. Shifts gears, but the gear shifter gets stuck up or down and I have to manually move it back to the middle before I shift again.

try spraying WD-40 or the shaft the shift lever is mounted on most likely the is oxidation on the shaft.

With the engine off, pull in the clutch and while rolling the bike forward or backward slowly, see if it you can shift it into neutral. If not, you have a transmission problem.
