Question about 1989 Suzuki DR 750 S

Where can i find part numbers and parts for my DR 750 S big?

When i try to start the bike it makes a loud teeth grinding-like noise. And while the engine is running, its shoots continuously.

That is a cdi problem. you need to buy a new one.

Grinding noise when starting


Eather your starter isn't engaging all the way to flywheel or flywheel teeth are chewed up. could be bearing in starter depending on year of bike.

did you get the high torqe starter installed when you put the big boar kit on.the factory starter doesnt like the big boar kits.if you did you may have broken teeth on starter or starter ring

Feels like gears are slipping with any kind of power


If you are hearing a bad grinding noise then Stop riding the bike NOW. If you continue to ride, or run the engine, you will only do more internal damage and make the repair cost higher. Chances are you have a bent shift fork and the noise is the engaging dogs on the slider gear grinding the side of a fixed gear because the bent fork is preventing full engagement.

The entire engine comes out of the frame and gets completely torn down. The top end comes off, the case covers come off, the clutch, shift shaft, kick starter, flywheel and electrics all come off. Then the case is split to gain access to the gears and shift drum. The gears and shift drum now get removed and now the fork can be replaced. If a gear needs to be replaced because of a broken teeth, replace also any gear the teeth mesh with. A few special tools are needed. Sorry for having to give you the bad news.

Grinding noise


If the 'grinding' only happens when the bike is in motion, the problem is probably not inside the engine. Remove the chain and then start the motor. Put it in gear(s) and listen for the noise. No noise eliminates the engine as the problem.

Now lay the chain on the concrete and 'compress the chain in a straight line. Mark the end of the chain on the concrete. Now hold on to one end of the chain and stretch the chain. Did it stretch more than one inch? Replace it if it did. Look at the chain. is it rusted? Is it limber or do the links resist bending? Replace the chain if rusty and stiff.

While you are doing all this, check the rear wheel. Does it spin freely. Make any noise? Does the rear brake go on and off properly? Next check your sprockets. A bad sprocket will ruin a new chain. The ends of the teeth on the sprocket should be rounded. A worn sprocket shows pointed teeth. I have seen teeth so pointed they could pop a balloon. LOOK at both sides of the front and back sprockets. Are they rubbing against anything anywhere? Look at the chain, any rubbing? Is the tire rubbing on anything? Did the prior owner install heavier sprockets and bigger chain than stock sprockets and chain? > Check with the dealer.

Chances are you will find the problem if you do the above.

Wont start


got a charger and it ended up being a dead battery.---- If that's the original battery, it's probably toast. You'll probably do well to search for a replacement at this point. Bike batteries are generally considered short-lived. The longest lasting battery I ever had in a bike went 9 years*. But that's so far away from a normal lifespan it's almost ridiculous. I suppose the average is more like 4-6 years but the modern, Maintenance-Free types seem the best.
