How do I set cam lopes on a volvo s40 2.0 T, some mechanic ******* up timing gears so now I just want to know how lopes are placed in a cylinder head

The cam ends have timing marks on them which usually have to be aligned when the crank is set to TDC (Top Dead Centre) - the specific alignment you can get from the following link:

remove rear cam plugs
if the cam positioning is correct the slots on the two cams will be parallel to each other --...--

How can i fix my honda 160i luxline 92 model starting difficulty?

Yes, you need to set your camshaft end distributor timing to TDC. (top dead centre). now you start vehicle, and adjust your distributor timing to 10% after tdc, on the coast or 8% inland

Timing belt broken

The only damage to the head will be bent valves so new valves will fix that end . Get a work shop manual (Aftermarket from a spares shop) (. Follow the pictures and directions closely or you will be doing the valves again .) IT is not TDC but where the timing marks point to . Replace the belt with a new one . AS oil is the killer of belts replace all seals and idler pulleys as well. As you are doing it for your son stay away from the wreckers as the next engine will want a belt as well . Have the job properly and have piece of mind knowing that the car will not let him down at a bad time.

I need to check the timing on my 1998 ford escort i have the timing gun i just dont know how to use it

1. Make sure the engine is off and the key is removed from the ignition.

2. Clamp the red clip to the positive terminal of your car battery.

3. Clamp the black clip to the negative terminal of your car battery.

4. The larger clip with the thickest insulation goes on your #1 spark plug wire by attaching the clip around the wire that leads to your #1 spark plug.

5. Next, you will want to rotate the lower crankshaft pulley so that it has the timing marks are visible on the crankshaft pulley. Be aware that on some cars the timing marks are located somewhere else and you should consult either your owner's manual or dealership.

6. Your automobile specifications sheet should tell you what your timing degree should be.

For example:
1969 Ford 429

6 Degrees BTDC @ 550 rpm in drive gear
Automatic Trans
Firing order: 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8

This means that you want to line up the pointer on the timing light with the 6° timing mark when the engine is idling in gear at 550 rpm. "BTDC" means Before Top Dead Center and "ATDC" means After Top Dead Center - top dead center is the point where the piston reaches the highest point in the cylinder and that is when the compression is the greatest.

The timing marks will have a line labeled "0" with marks above and below it, and depending on which way the wheel rotates, you will see the lines before the "0" (BTDC), or after the "0" (ATDC).

7. If you want, you can use some chalk to mark the timing marks to make them more visible. If there is a rubber hose on the side of the distributor, disconnect the rubber hose from the vacuum advance and put a plug in the end of the hose to seal it off temporarily.

8. Okay, now start up your engine, letting it warm up.

9. Take your timing light and aim it at the timing marks, pressing the button on the light. Because you have the light hooked up to your spark plug means that it has current passing through it every time your spark plug fires, making the light go on and off, creating a strobe effect. Because of this, the timing marks should appear to be standing still. Now, is the pointer pointing at the correct mark? If yes, you are all set, you do not need to adjust your timing. If it is not, you should adjust your timing.

10. Adjust the Timing by looking below the distributor, at the base of your distributor shaft, for a fastener called the distributor hold-down clamp. We want to loosen this fastener so the distributor can turn on the shaft. Grasp the vacuum advance and move it back and forth.

11. Rotate the distributor slightly, and then aim your timing light back at the timing marks again. How does it look? If it is farther away from the marks, then move the distributor in the opposite direction. Then, check again with your timing light. Continue doing this until the pointer is pointing at the correct degree point as required.

12. Once the timing is good, tighten the fastener for the distributor hold-down clamp, making sure you do not move the distributor. After tightening this fastener, double check your timing to ensure it is still correct.

13. Turn off your engine, remove the key from the ignition, and disconnect the timing light.

Need to know where the timing marks are on cam and cranck for 1991 oldsmobile sillouetechanging the timing do i line up the marks?

Finding the timing marks is simple, it is an impression (a small arrow) on both the crank and the cam. As for the exact time set, I would refer to the owner's manual but if you are doing it off the cuff pull the number one piston top dead center, line up the rotor button with the number one piston and set crank at top dead center and cam at bottom dead center. This will be a good starting point, but the owner's manual will give you more exact instructions.

I need to know how to time a 1987 dodge dakota 3.9 liter engine.

Are you doing a timing gear and chain if so the crankshaft gear has a dot that goes up top the camshaft has a dot that goes to the bottom you basically set dot to dot on timing gear and chain.

Wanting to know what the timing proceedure is on my 2007 model DRZ 250 motorbike

Not sure what state of "togetherness" your motor is in but, there is an inspection bolt hole on the front side of the magneto cover. Take this bolt out together with the sparkplug and remove cylinder head cover. Turn engine till a timing mark appears in the centre of the inspection hole. The piston/crank will be at TDC (top dead centre) if magneto rotor is keyed on correctly. Do not set anything on engine other than at TDC. Magneto is tightened on to crankchaft end with a locating key, this covers your spark timing.
Valve timing is achieved via the cams, place camshafts into cups at TDC (all valves will be shut) and timing marks on camshaft sprockets will line up with line on cam cup journals in the head. Camchain is fed on from opposite side as chain tensioner to ensure timing remains when tensioned. Let me know if you are "all parts on the bench" or contemplating a stripdown, I can then clarify all necessary steps.

How do i set timing on 1998 chevy truck 350 vortec

number 1 plug wire should be pointing towards the front drivers corner . drivers side piston order is 1-3-5-7 front to back .passengers side front to back is 2-4-6-8 then the firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 . if you pull the # 1 spark plug and put your finger in the hole /remover power wire while doing this at the dist.bump the engine when you feel a rush of air that's the compression stroke when the piston is at the top of it's compression stroke . pop the cap look to make sure the rotor is pointing at the # 1 piston roughly and place cap back on so the # 1 terminal is over the wire end of the rotor contact tip and work clockwise around with the firing order and hope this helps .if it still dont want to run then you may have jumped timing chain or stretched they will jump out of time and cause a headache.
