Hey - After reading some comments on this site I found the prob. Glad to hear it statrn, MIne only dies after you let the clutch out, if the kickstand is down. Is a good feature, for more than one reason. Glad to hear you'd recommend fixya.com to others. Later, enjoy the ride. TT

So just to clarify: While you are still holding the clutch lever in, and you drop from neutral into first, it dies? Without a lunge forward??? Let me know... TaterTodd

Transmission ?

My first guess is that the gears are engaging, but if it's the original 12 year old clutch, it might not be grabbing.
Pull primary cover, put into first and try to pull forward while someone is watching clutch to see if it's locking up ok.

What's your problem?1995 yamaha virago 1100 that sometimes you you put into gear and immediately dies

The Clutch on some bikes will disengage the starter motor. Yamaha will not allow you to engage gear when the side stand is down. Hope this gives you some idea

Starts & runs & idles great until I put it in gear & release the clutch then it stalls

Sounds like the kickstand switch is shorting out. It only dies when put in gear. If you have had your switch removed, check out the wires, if the switch is still there and working, check out the switch, it might need a shot of wd40. Check it out.

Just put a new battery in and the bike starts great and runs great but when I put it into gear it dies (yes I am using the clutch). Tried to give it a little more gas before putting it into gear and it...

Okay.....I think you have a sidestand switch problem.
Do you notice that if you leave it in gear after it stalls....that even with the clutch in it won't crank the starter?
The sidestand switch is a plunger that presses in when the sidestand is down. The interlocks on the RS require that to start the bike...with the sidestand down, it must be in neutral. If you place it in gear which the sidestand down, it kills the ignition to prevent riding off and snagging the stand on the road etc..
So if you had the sidestand up before placing it in gear.....since the bike sat for a year...I suspect the plunger for your sidestand switch is stuck partially in (its been pushed in for a year!)
Find the switch down by the sidestand pivot....have someone hold the bike or support it so you can raise the stand, and spray some WD40 on the plunger and work it in and out letting it snap out several times then try it again.

I just bought a 2004 honda shadow custom. It idles perfectly but when I put it in gear it dies as iff the clutch is not engaged. I have check the cable and it is tight what else can I do?

Did you check the kickstand kill switch? I had the same problem on my yamaha, Ran fine, could throttle it up no problem, but when i put it in gear it died. Found that the kill switch was bad. Hope it is that simple.

I have a nid 70s enduro 100 it runs great but whaen i put it in gear it jumps a bit then dies it starts in gear as long as the clutch is not engaged im a bit lost ps i do know how to ride so its...

It sounds like your clutches are stuck. If the bike has been sitting for awhile the clutch plates will stick together. Sometimes they will unstick.1st I would change the oil. Then i would place the front tire up against a solid wall start the bike pull in clutch put in gear ,repeat a few times. If this does not unstick the clutch you might have to replace your fiber clutch plates.Hope these helps

I have a 2001 kawasaki 125 eliminator shuts off

If it dies when put into gear then its the side-stand switch (stand is down or switch not working)
If it dies when the clutch lever is released then either it was released too quickly with not enough revs, the engine doesnt have enough power to pull away or possibly the clutch switch is working in reverse

Good Luck
Hope this helps.
