Question about 2000 Harley Davidson FLSTF Fat boy

1 Answer

Engine light 2000 Fatboy- When I turn the ignition switch on the engine light comes on like it is supposed to, then I wait for it to go out before I start it. After I start it the engine comes on again. After a few moments with the engine running it will go out again. Can anyone give me some things to look for with this problem?

Thats not a problem, thats exactly what its supposed to do. After you start yer bike, the engine light should come on for about 5 seconds and then go out. Thats how they are designed. If that occurs, u are A - OK!

Harley troubleshooting

It is most probably a faulty switch, I had the same problem on my 2000 fatboy, I removed the switch and touched the wires together to see if the starter turned over which it did so I replaced the switch and have had no more problems so far.

Eninge lite blinks fast and wont start

Pull any error codes.

The engine light lights up when you turn the ignition switch on, then goes off. After four seconds, if it comes on again and stays on, there is a present fault code. When it is an historical fault code, it comes on with ignition and goes off then comes on and goes off again. I believe in like 4 second intervals. A historical code will not be removed until a cycle of 50 ignition on/of intervals has passed. In other words, the engine light will continue to light two times when ignition switch is turned on, after 50 on/off cycles have passed the historical codes will no longer affect the engine light when starting.
If you will hold the odometer button on the side of the console down, and turn the ignition on and off, three times I think, waiting for the fuel pump to stop before turning the ignition switch to the off position, and one second until you turn it on again, the third time holding the odometer button down until the engine light begins to blink it will begin to blink in a fast sequence showing the fault codes will follow.
First indication of fault code display is rapidly blinking engine light. After that count the number of times the engine light lights up. There will be a brief pause between digits. If there are multiple codes stored, the rapid blinking will separate each. Once the fault codes begin to repeat, you have gone through all stored codes.
Tips: Have a pencil and paper ready.
Maybe ask a friend to help out. Sometimes a second pair of eyes can be good.
Go through a couple of cycles, so that you are sure you haven't missed any codes.
One example is if it blinks 3 times, pause, the blinks 2 times, that means 32.
Code 32: Rear Fuel Injector

Starter will not turn over not even when jumping just clicks any ideas

Joe, the power travel from the batterie to the relay switch, from there to the ignition key from the ignition key to the start switch from the start switch to the starter. If the batterie is in good shape(12.8V) the problem could be between those 3 points. Another one, a 12 year old starter could be also a problem. It's not easy to remove the starter, but if you can please check brushes and continuity, this is 600$ piece, try to do yourself(if you can) and you will save money.

Normal for oil light to be on before starting 2000 fatboy

Any time you start the vehicle, it is normal for all of the service lights to come on for a few seconds and then turn off once vehicle is running. It is the system performing a self diagnostic check.

I have a 2000 Harley fatboy and it won't start

Hi Tim, when checking for spark the CKP needs to measure the compression bump in order to send the correct signal to the ICM/ECM so always check for spark with either a third plug grounded or lift the end of the plug boot 1/2 " off one of spark plugs that are in the head. and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel tank empty
2. Fuel supply valve turned off.
3. Fouled spark plugs.
4. Engine flooded with gasoline as a result of over use of enrichner.
5. Fuel valve or filter clogged.
6. Vacuum hose to automatic fuel supply valve disconnected, leaking, or pinched.
7. Discharged battery, loose or broken battery connections.
8. Loose wire connection at coil, battery or plug between ignition sensor and module.
9. Spark plug cables in bad condition and shorting, spark plug cable connections loose,
or cables connected to wrong cylinders.
10. Ignition timing incorrect due to faulty ignition coil, ignition module, or sensors " Manifold Absolute Pressure" "Camshaft Position Sensor" "Crank Position Sensor" "Brake Apply Sensor
11. Engine lubricant to heavy ( winter operation )
12. Sticking or damaged valves or push rod wrong length.
13. Primary cam sproket spline sheared or missing spacer.
14. Security alarm system not disarming.

Head light & spot lights quit working.

Check if there's (live + (positive) current coming to the headlight and the spot light once you turn them 'on' .
If theres no live (current) there thn the switch could be faulty, remove the switch and you can also check over there the live (current) to the input terminal of the switch and after tht operate the switch and check if theres current passing thro to the required wire for the head light and the spot light.
If theres no current to the switch thn you have to trace it back to the fuse box and finally to the battery .
Hope this helps.

Breakers keep kicking off when starting 2000 Harley Sport XLHC

Battery connections have been the leading cause of what you've described. Turn the key, everythings in order, then contact! Instead of potato potato, it's just "click" and lights out. If this sounds familiar, check that battery is tight. Grounds are netorius for coming loose due to sporty vibrations.
