Question about 1982 Suzuki Gs 550 L
I have a 1982 Suzuki GS 550 L that will not start without the use of ether. After it starts I have to choke the air intake with my hand to keep it running even with the enrichers all the way on. Once it warms up it runs just fine except it has a tendancy to stall the engine when you give it full throttle going down the road. If the engine dies or I shut it off even when it is hot, it usually will not start back up until you give it a little ether. Is it possible that the timing is off? How would I check and adjust the timing? Thank you for any assistance you can provide.
Ive found that the carbs need the coreect airflow to work correctly. If you dismantle the carbs and make sure all the air passages are clear from blockages.Ive got an early gs550 in a gokart and it had no airbox and it was doing the same untill i covered some of the carb throats with my hand and then she would rev her nuts off.if you take any air screws out mark there position and count the turns out to place them back in the same place.Im making my own manometer using some 4mm hose a garden sprinkler 4mm attachment and a cheap airflow meter from cip1.com.
running the correct air box is crucial and the filter must be clean.
hope this helps David New Zealand

It's not the timing take the carbs off and rebuild them and replace all the rubber hoses and and the rubber rings that hold the carbs on and change the plugs then check your compression

I had the same problem with my 550 Suzuki, what we did was replace the 4 rubbers under the carbs, and tuned them up, new plugs.
It is running a little better, but it is quite touchy when you start it and if you don't have a good battery and it is not turning quick enough, it won't start.
I have now gotten used to the choke, pulled towards me as far as it goes and then slowly as it warms up, i move it forward.
It does move nicely once it's warmed up.
