Question about 1982 Suzuki Gs 550 L

Suzuki wont start

I have a 1982 Suzuki GS 550 L that will not start without the use of ether. After it starts I have to choke the air intake with my hand to keep it running even with the enrichers all the way on. Once it warms up it runs just fine except it has a tendancy to stall the engine when you give it full throttle going down the road. If the engine dies or I shut it off even when it is hot, it usually will not start back up until you give it a little ether. Is it possible that the timing is off? How would I check and adjust the timing? Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

    I have a 1979 750gs and it does the same thing Idont know how to adjust the timing .Is it possible to connect the coils wrong they seem to be cut to fit?

    sure sounds like a dirty carb or clogged fuel filter.

    how long was it stored before you tried to restart it?

    when was the last time the carbs were cleaned?

    has been stoped for long time? what is the engine mileage? do you have latest compression readings? what are the carburators type? do not bother with timing at this stage. Just for your guidance ether may excessively damage the cyl head.try to use as little as possible. rgrds

Ive found that the carbs need the coreect airflow to work correctly.If you dismantle the carbs and make sure all the air passages are clear from blockages.Ive got an early gs550 in a gokart and it had no airbox and it was doing the same untill i covered some of the carb throats with my hand and then she would rev her nuts off.if you take any air screws out mark there position and count the turns out to place them back in the same place.Im making my own manometer using some 4mm hose a garden sprinkler 4mm attachment and a cheap airflow meter from cip1.com.

running the correct air box is crucial and the filter must be clean.

hope this helps David New Zealand

It's not the timing take the carbs off and rebuild them and replace all the rubber hoses and and the rubber rings that hold the carbs on and change the plugs then check your compression

I had the same problem with my 550 Suzuki, what we did was replace the 4 rubbers under the carbs, and tuned them up, new plugs.
It is running a little better, but it is quite touchy when you start it and if you don't have a good battery and it is not turning quick enough, it won't start.
I have now gotten used to the choke, pulled towards me as far as it goes and then slowly as it warms up, i move it forward.
It does move nicely once it's warmed up.

Well the good news is the click indicates the switch is working, when you press the switch the 2poles on the solenoide are joined together alowing the current to the starter,bridge the wires at the solenoide this should put power directly to the starter you wont need to press the start switch, if the engine does not turn over check the connections to both the battery and starter motor,

It runs good but can't get it to start in cold weather. What should I do 85 Suzuki gs 550.

Without much other information of what has been done, I would start with the choke system. The choke cable may be detached or far out of adjustment. With a helper see if you can watch the choke cable move the choke lever on the carbs when you move the choke lever to full choke. Cables do break and or stretch. If that is the case then reconnect, replace, or adjust as necessary. If the choke lever and carb choke system is moving correctly then the problem may be in the carburators themselves.

Good Luck

Replaced the ariginal intake with k and n airfilter individuals, and now at 3000 rpm it boggs down do you have any suggestions.I no im supposed to put bigger jets in the carbs but is there anything else im...

The CV carbs actually prefer still air from the standard air box, but try the choke at 3000rpm and if it helps then it is lean, raising the needles may help at this rpm. may not need bigger mains unless you also have a sports exhaust
remember that to raise the needles you put the circlips in the lower grooves.

1982 GS550LZ. starts right away but idle too fast. how do I track down a vacuum leak?

I have seen the rubber boots for the carbs crack on these and leak. Also check the rubber plugs for the synchronization ports. I spray wd-40 around and listen for speed changes. also spray around the carb butterfly shaft. Is you choke stuck on? does it slow down after its hot?
try to idle it down. Maybe your air screws need adjusting.

A FRIEND GAVE ME A 1982 SUZUKI GS550L WAS PARKED FOR OVER 5 YRS + AND IT STARTED WITH A JUMP START I THINK THE BATT IS NO GOOD DONT HOLD CHARGE WHEN ITS RUNNING , THE FLANGES HOLDING THE CARBS LEAKS...

The neutral safety switch is out of adjustment. Most bike won't start unless it is in Neutral or the clutch lever pulled in. Get a new battery and charge it up full. The intake boots need to be replaced or it will run lean. That is why you need to chock it to get it to run.

Wont start

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Appreciate the direct "Ask Me".

Your described problem based on the bike being a 1982 model could be varied, among them are:
  • weak spark - not necessarily weak battery. Culprits could be loose loose connector to the CDI, low IGN +12 to the + terminal of the coil (check with a voltmeter while just switch on and when cranking/starting), or even a loose ground terminal. Check spark by removing plugs, reconnect the plugwires, let the threaded end touch metal part of engine, crank. Sparks should be strong;
  • corroded/poor contacts in the ignition switch resulting to the above. You can test by running a jumper wire straight from the battery to the + terminals of the ignition coil;
  • too lean air/fuel - plugs should be brownish in color;
  • air or vacuum leak - resulting to the above and high or poor idling;
  • unbalanced carbs - carb check/clean, verify air adjustment screw number of turns,
  • compression low - have a compression check.
Would look forward to your updates. Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.
