Question about 1986 Suzuki GSX-R 750 G

1982 Suzuki won't start

I have a 1982 Suzuki GS550L that won't start unless I use ether. After I get it started I have to choke the air cleaner with my hand to keep it running, even with the enrichers on all the way. After it warms up it will run fine except sometimes if I give it full throttle it will stall or try to stall the engine. At any time if the engine dies or if i shut it off even after it is hot, it will not start back up without the use of ether usually. Is it possible that the timing is off? How do I adjust it? Also the alternator is not charging, but I think I can trace down the problem on that. Thanks for any assitance you can provide.

    I have cleaned the carburators out completely except for the low idle jets (didn't see them at the time). All of the diaphrams and needles seem to be functioning. Could low idle jets be clogged and causing this problem? Only used the ether to see if it would even run, have not used it extensively.

THe Carbs need to be pulled off and cleaned. If you keep on what your doing. You will burn a valve or a piston. It like leaning a torch out to cut metal.Alternator is probally a bad ground, are blowed fuse????

    Yes the low spped jets are your problem. You might have to buy on of those carb kit, vat. It the size of a 1-gallon paint can, but only about the hight of a 3/4-gallon paint can, that has a basket to put the carb into, to soak it over night. (wear Rubber gloves)!!!!

is it the carbs with diaphrams on top ? check they seated correctly ! if slide type then renove filter and get a rag to block slightly the cyl thats off as you run engine and see if it starts to fire , if yes then see if it runs without rag acting as a choker ! if not then clean and rebalance the 4 carbs so they open at same time !

99' Suzuki GXS-R 600.. Won't start unless you pull the "CHOKE" and stalls if you turn off the Choke. Also it sputters at idle, I drained the tank and put in fresh gas, replaced air filter... want to...


overhaul the carburetors or just take them apart and clean them you may have needles sticking and jets plugged, buy a kit, and or clean all pieces of carb inside and out with gum out carb cleaner and put back together blow all airs out with compressed air. When done screw in air fuel mixture screws all the way and turn counter clockwise out 3 full turns to fire it up then adjust accordingly.

I to have just acquired a 1982 GS550L. I live in Smithville and Clares in Fonthill are a Suzuki dealer . Ive already bought and ordered parts from them . They have been very helpfull so far. As far as the service manual goes I ordered mine from Indigo for around $35.00 with shipping.

Replaced the ariginal intake with k and n airfilter individuals, and now at 3000 rpm it boggs down do you have any suggestions.I no im supposed to put bigger jets in the carbs but is there anything else im...


The CV carbs actually prefer still air from the standard air box, but try the choke at 3000rpm and if it helps then it is lean, raising the needles may help at this rpm. may not need bigger mains unless you also have a sports exhaust
remember that to raise the needles you put the circlips in the lower grooves.

I need spect for cab settings on a 82 suzuki gs550l..


For each carb, turn the air screw and the throttle screw inward until they LIGHTLY seat. Now open each of them one and one half turns. This is the factory setting. If the adjusting screws are seated too tight, the jet will leave a ring indention on the adjuster screw. The ring is not a good thing and will affect performance. Please rate my answer.

A FRIEND GAVE ME A 1982 SUZUKI GS550L WAS PARKED FOR OVER 5 YRS + AND IT STARTED WITH A JUMP START I THINK THE BATT IS NO GOOD DONT HOLD CHARGE WHEN ITS RUNNING , THE FLANGES HOLDING THE CARBS LEAKS...


The neutral safety switch is out of adjustment. Most bike won't start unless it is in Neutral or the clutch lever pulled in. Get a new battery and charge it up full. The intake boots need to be replaced or it will run lean. That is why you need to chock it to get it to run.

Wont start

Appreciate the direct "Ask Me".

Your described problem based on the bike being a 1982 model could be varied, among them are:
  • weak spark - not necessarily weak battery. Culprits could be loose loose connector to the CDI, low IGN +12 to the + terminal of the coil (check with a voltmeter while just switch on and when cranking/starting), or even a loose ground terminal. Check spark by removing plugs, reconnect the plugwires, let the threaded end touch metal part of engine, crank. Sparks should be strong;
  • corroded/poor contacts in the ignition switch resulting to the above. You can test by running a jumper wire straight from the battery to the + terminals of the ignition coil;
  • too lean air/fuel - plugs should be brownish in color;
  • air or vacuum leak - resulting to the above and high or poor idling;
  • unbalanced carbs - carb check/clean, verify air adjustment screw number of turns,
  • compression low - have a compression check.

Suzuki wont start


it's not the timing take the carbs off and rebuild them and replace all the rubber hoses and and the rubber rings that hold the carbs on and change the plugs then check your compression
