When started hard to keep going on idol when warm brilliant running no problems on performance spark plugs sooty does not burn oil

This sounds like your valve clearances are going out of adjustment.

Unless you have done something recently to the carbs. or the bike has been standing I wouldn't suspect them to be the cause of your difficulties. It's easy to think the carbs. are the culprit because however hard you try to adjust the choke you cannot get even running when starting and soon she is likely to start stalling at traffic lights etc.

Think what i would try first is a fuel additive to see if you possible might have gotten a little moisture or dirt in tank , I like sea-foam brand available @ advance auto or other auto stores but i would try this first and see results , black plugs could mean rich mix not enough air or moisture in fuel the latter is easiest to eliminate

Running rough when gets warm


Hi Paul:
I'd be suspicious that valve/cam clearances will be questionable.
As components warm up they expand, so clearances get less.
This is one of the maintenance items that I personally leave to the shops with trained mechanics

Bike started running rough and smoking out of one of the tailpipes. Started while it was at idol.


Hi, Randy and the usual suspects are:
1. Spark plugs in bad condition or partially fouled.
2. Spark plug cables in bad condition or leaking.
3. Spark plug gap too close or too wide.
4. Faulty ignition coil, module and or sensor.
5. Battery nearly discharged.
6. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
7. Intermittent short circuit due to damaged wire insulation.
8. Water or dirt in the fuel system, carburetor or filter.
9. Fuel tank vent system plugged or carburetor vent line closed off.
10. Carburetor controls misadjusted.
11. Damaged carburetor or intake seals.
12. Loose or dirty ignition module connector at crankcase.
13. Faulty MAP, CKP, O2, and or CMP sensors.
14. Incorrect valve timing.
15. Weak or broken valve springs.
16. Damage intake or exhaust valve.

Piaggio x8 runs rough when warm


Maybe the spark plug breaking down under load when warmed up.Try another spark plug, but make sure it is the recommended one

I have a 2000 intruder 1500lc. starts fine runs on idol. than the idol speeds up and than speeds up more. I changed the gas and put in some sea foam. thought it might be bad gas. it back fires and runs...


hi, first thing to do is identify if all the exhausts are hot when the engine has been running for a minit or two, probably the backfireing you are hearing is at least one of the spark plugs has become contaminated with fuel and as a result the engine is not running properly on that cylinder, the backfire will be the exsess fuel igniteing as the plug becomes warm and then fires, it may also be that the fuel has become contaminated, causing a varnishing effect within the float chamber, thus blocking or restricting the fuel flow through the main jet, the machine would run on primary jet and of course the choke jet, but would fail to respond on throttle opening through the main jet, try drain old fuel from float bowls, hope this helps welcome to the motorcycling world, the more you learn about the machine you ride, the more you will enjoy rideing it, paul edwards

One of my plugs keeps fouling after a couple days of riding. Its black and ashy, while the others look a little white. Its a 76' with the electronic ignition. She runs great, other then a slight roughness...


NGK makes spark plug caps for about $5 each. Each cap has a resister ion it. When a resister gets corroded or burnt out you have problems with the affected cylinder. You have two coils on your motorcycle , each one operates two spark plugs. Since you are only having problems with one plug (not two plugs) Your problem is with the plug, the cap, or the wire. I recommend replacing all four spark plug caps . This should take care of the problem.
If it does not , consider replacing your coils with Accell coils. The coils in the Accell kit will directly bolt into your Honda coil mounts and come with new wire and caps (the caps require screw on tops for the plugs.)
A tune up tip for your 1976 GL1000 : Take the carburetor tops off (they are held on by two phillips screws) , pull out the floating pistons , clean the pistons , and clean the inside of the carburetor tops with carburetor cleaner. This is necessary yearly maintenance on early models and will help with idling, plug fouling, take off, acceleration, and general all around performance. This should take care of the rough running.

81 yamaha xj 650 spark plugs fire when engine isn't running


If you are saying the bike still continues to want to run, (rough running I am sure ), after the key is shut off then the engine is "dieseling". Carbon buildup on the piston / valves/ cylinder head is getting red hot from running. The hot spot(s) serve to ignite the fuel much the same as the spark plugs would. Burn only premium gas, be sure the cylinder is clean and not caked with mud or such, and change to a colder spark plug like NGK BP-8es or BP-9es ( BP-7es is the stock plug ). This may keep the engine cooler and stop the problem. The only other way is to pull the head then de-carbon it and the pistons.
