How do you adjust valve on a walk behind mtd lawnmower with a pull starter

OHV engines are quite simple. Remove the valve plate (4 screws) to gain access. Turn the engine over until the piston is at TDC (top dead centre) with both valves at rest. Then you unscrew the locking nut before moving the adjusting nut below. Use a feeler guage, set both valves at 0.05" (1.27mm).
A side valve engine is more difficult and generally outside the ability of most home mechanics. But here's how it's done;
Normally the head gasket will incurr damage so be prepared to purchase a replacement. On many engines you will need to remove the muffler to gain access. Then move the valve cover plate which is located directly behind the muffler. Now remove the cylinder head. Both valves are retained by a recessed washer style keeper which locks around the valve stem. Use a small valve spring compressor, compress the spring and the retainer will then be able to be removed and you can withdraw the valves. Remove both springs from their loctaions. Clear away any carbon then reinsert the valves without the springs. Now turn the engine over until TDC and insert feeler guage. You will need to have a clearance of between 0.05" to 0.07 for the inlet valve and 0.07" to 0.09" for the exhaust valve. If the clearances are too close you will need to file some material from the valve stem. If the clearances are too great you will need to cut the valve seat deeper. Once the correct clearances are obtained, reinsert the valves, refit the head with a new gasket (torque to 160 in pds).

Rattle nosie on tappets on engine start up,do tappets or valves need adjustment, and if so what are settings, and the best way to do the job, regards eamo.

Sometimes a dirty oil filter will cause lack of oil to the top end at startup.
As soon as the oil warms, it flows better and faster and hence the noise goes away after warm up.

If you need valves adjusted, the motor must be at TDC on compression stroke(both valves closed)
The motor must be cold do not try to adjust the valve clearance on a warm engine.

On TDC, pull the valve covers and check the clearance on the intake and exhaust valves by inserting a feeler gauge under the tappet.
INTAKE should be : .03-05mm
EXHAUST should be .05-.08 mm

Im sure you don't need a valve adjustment. but if you do: Put Engine on TDC
Loosen the locknut with a 9 or 10 mm wrench, stick the feeler gauge under the tappet, and tighten the little square tipped valve adjuster screw clockwise until you feel friction on the feeler guage.
Enough friction that the feeler gauge feels tight but you can still slide it back and forth.
Not carefully tighten the locknut. Check the feeler guage during tightening to make sure it didn't get too tight or too loose. Once you set the clearance, move to the next valve, and repeat the process using the other feeler guage.
Once both are done put the covers back on and your done,

NOTE: You may have to remove seat, gas tank, airbox, and side covers to get to the covers.

Yamaha gladiator ss valve cleareances

Noise seems to be generating from the rocker arm of the valve adjustment. You have to do valve adjustment only when the engine is in cold condition. ie room temperature.

At this point slip a feeler guage & adjust. first loosen the rocker arm hexagon lock nut & try adjusting the valve pressing post. You may require special tool for this!!

I have an 04 RMZ 250 I just re-shimmed the valves and put a new piston in and bike was running great started first kick road it all over the street and golf course. went on ONE ride in the heat and...

sounds like maybe valves were shimmed too tight, check service manual for clearances...better a little loose than too tight, can cause alot of damage to cam & head,be careful!!

Need tappet setting .do you set tappets when motor is cold or hot and at what gap for gl1100 1981

Make sure you understand this completely...the engine must be COLD, overnight in the frozen wasteland cold. No short cuts here, let the bike cool for 24 hours to be on the safe side. Your adjustments are .004" for Intake and .005" for exhaust. Hope this helps.

Installing push rod guide

I have worked on many gx160 engines and have found that the most economical way to repair an engine with worn valves/guides is to replace the complete head with a clone usually available on ebay for around 60 bucks or so. A honda gx runs perfect with a new clone head. To repair the head properly you need special tools to cut/shape re-seat etc. Then when you consider the cost of honda parts and the chance of making an error, well even the best small engine mechanics make bad calls. However on the other hand, there is great pleasure in rebuilding an engine that has given you great service. Small engine parts/supply outlets like Rotary inc. sell valve guide cutter kit that comes with instructions. You should also use new valves and cut the valve seats.(another kit) If all you want is a great running motor, consider the clone head. Good Luck on your project.
