No manual, looking to top up the oil in crankcase.

Take the two hex screws out of right side rear cover and remove the chrome cover. The clear lens is the oil level check. The oil filler is to the left of the clear lens oil check.
The oil filter is under the battery, and the oil drain plug is toward the back underside of the engine.

Warm engine and stand upright on centerstand to drain oil, let drain for 15 minutes.

I use Castrol Power1 GPS 4T 10W-40 in my air and oil cooled Suzuki. You will need 5 quarts when changing oil and filter. The link below has diagrams of the bike in exploded views.

?how much oil or what kind of oil do i use for my shaft ?

should be a dipstick on the underside of the filler cap or look a little lower down the crankcase cover for a small round viewing window

How to change oil in my 82 yamaha xj650. is there a engine diagram or something for me to find the filter and oil capacity.

the oil filter should be inside the round finned cover at the front of the motor/trans. if you have found the drain plug also at the front but underneath, the filter is above it.... oil capacity should be molded into the crankcase next to the oil filler cap

use stadium yamaha website for exploded views on all parts of your bike
