you've earthed something out, have you checked fuse. brown is your live wire on cdi, (seems to be the original problem). you could make your own connection to live. but disconnect original cdi if you do incase it earths out. i wouldn't take it from battery though as will constantly be on. find a live that only comes on with ignition key. i.e look at ignition key wires.
Assuming that the bike is stock with no modifications, the first thing to try is to sit on the bike and lift the side stand up to the riding position. If the bike starts then you may have a problem with the side stand switch or the clutch lever switch.
Has the bike been sitting for a long time? Does the fuel smell stale?

You can't, just went through this. You'll need to find the correct CDI for your bike, some years will switch back an forth but rarely and Suzuki has never printed, that I've seen, a wiring diagram for the CDI. The 94 might work if you can find it and it should plug right in, the 98 will have a different curve that most likely wont.
