Spun Bearing on 1998 Yamaha V-Star

We have a '98 V-Star recently purchased that suddenly spun a rod bearing after fifteen miles. It test drove fine. After 15 miles, however, It froze up the engine and we had to completely rebuild it. What might the cause of this be?

If replacing the piston pin bearing no splitting is needed. If replacing the crank pin bearing splitting is needed. You knew that I am sure but I had to clarify. The flywheel is held in place with one washer and a nut on the end of the crank. Timing is accomplished with a woodruff key on the shaft. Using a flywheel puller tool is the proper method. It is a simple and low cost tool and it sounds like you have enough knowledge of engines to need one now and in the future. In a worst case scenario, use a mallet, striking the flywheel on four points around the perimeter of the wheel and in an "outward" direction. With some luck the flywheel will pop loose.

When you are purchasing the flywheel puller, buy a case splitter also. Also reasonably low cost, it makes the splitting clean and easy. I strongly suggest you install new crank bearings and seals. Whatever caused the crank pin bearing to go bad did not do the crank main bearings any good either. I would hate to see you have to split the case again eight weeks from now.

How are you planning to separate the crank halves, re-assembly and truing of the crank? The dealer should do this part. I can't find a free repair manual on the web but the next best is a parts diagram. Go to the site below where you can see a parts diagram for your specific bike. You will select the actual brand, year, model, etc., once you go to the site. Part numbers and prices are also shown. You can order parts from this site. In the event no price is shown on a particular part, the part is not in stock.

SOURCE: Quad will not start electricly, and pull start binds?

hello, i agree with johnnyraptor, i have a 2000 warrior, i t has done the same thing, except my bolts didnt break, my one way starter bearing sound like it was sorta dragging, then it would break free, sometimes it would start, then it would just spin, had to pull flywheele, race and bearing is bolted to backside of flywheel, thats the big hex head screws that you see, when looking at flywheele, when you pull stator cover, sounds like you need oneway bearing, make sure not to put on backwards, have seen it done.cheapcycleparts.com has them for about 50.00 to 75.00 dollars, warriors about 60.00 ,mine came from yamaha, 150.00. wish i had found this other place before i bought mine...

Need to know common causes of a Spun Bearing on 1998 Yamaha V-Star

Hi, Anonymous ouch !!!!!!!!!!!! that really sucks. This usually happens due to rod cap stretch during abusive driving situations. It can also happen due to a lack of lubrication, either because of a lack of oil or because oil is flowing incorrectly. It can also be caused by a combination of any (or all) of the three. 2002 Yamaha road star midnight star have from loud knocking engine

Do not run it in that condition because it is going to cost a lot more to fix if it goes completely. it sounds like a valve is dropped or a bearing spun or a rod is bent or a compression/oil ring may be broken-but ANY of those will be a lot cheaper if you do NOT start it again and either tear it down yourself if you know how, or get a certified mechanic to do so. Good luck!

I have a spun bearing on 1 cylinder on my 2005 chevy equinox do i need to replace the piston or can i get away with just repiring the crankshaft

A spun bearing on a connecting rod usualy requires turning the crank. You can sometime get away with filling off the worst part, and using emmery cloth on it, but you need to have a mirometer to check the crank shaft. The connecting rod could also be damaged. It takes a good eye and a good hand stone to remove any burrs. You can then clean up the old bearing and shim it to test the bearing surface with bluing. Sorry this is rather complex, it just takes a lot to keep an engine togeather as several thousand RPM. It will take a good machinist to verify the repairs.

AutoZone on-line has some good step by step directions and some include pictures. You have to register first ( free) and then just navigate to the "repair info" section.

I think the person that said to just change the brg with a new std one without taking a precise measurement of the crankshaft journal gave you bad advise. I ALWAYS "mic" the journals to see if they are undersized. that involves the use of a set of micrometers that can measure thousanths of an inch.

I have a 1998 Buick LaSabre with 80,000 original miles. Has always been maintenanced. Problem: At a stop light, died. Had it towed home. Engine is locked up! How could this have happened???

oil pump couild've failed, allowing no oil pressure,or bearing could've spun and threw a rod bearing, usually when this happens there is some fair warnings, like oil light/gauge droping pressure or a loud knocking noise.if you didn't experience any of these I would like to know also.

Oil presure is at 120psi. Oil level ok, not over heating, no strange sound. Could it be the Oil sending switch. One last point, It started saturday and I have put on over 250 miles.

it could be the sender. hook up an manual gauge to verify the true psi..if it s 120psi you either have a spun bearing or blockage on the pressure side of the pump..possibly one of the passages on the lower end or a spun rod or main bearing somewhere.

Talk to an engine rebuild shop near you. They should be able to save your crank if it's not broken, and get you a set of bearings and piston or anything else you need. They'll be in the Yellow pages.

04 ford ranger rod bearing

Your vehicle timing chain jumped a sprocket
spinning a bearing means that the bearing does not get enough oil between it and, it's rod; causing the "babbet" a soft slippery metal lining the bearing; to heat up and, weld it's self to the crankshaft or. piston rod

Engine problems

it can be a spun bearing or the rod itself gets wore out and stretches into an egg shape this will also cause a knock but usually when a bearing spins it will make the engine hard to crank over. then as it wears out the knock will develope, or it will just suddenly appear and the blow apart.
