If only life was as simple as a stand switch. After more investigation I beleive the fault is in the igniter. If any one has some tech expertise on this model I would love to hear from them.

If the ignitor will run the engine in nuetral, the ignitor is not at fault. Have you checked for continuity at the kickstand switch with the kickstand both up and down; the switch will have continuity in one position and not in the other. Have you checked for a grounding and ungrounding of the trans switch in the nuetral and other gear selections; the nuetral grounding and all the gear selection groundings will different. Sometimes the kickstand switch wires break or short against the frame and can cause this. Most asian motorcycles work pretty much the same way.

Check that the kickstand switch is adjusted and working correctly and that the wires are connected to the kickstand switch.

If the igniter runs the engine before its put in gear, the ignitor is not at fault. The transmission selector switch and kickstand switch both work together to keep the engine running. Get a wiring diagram and you will be able to see exactly how they work together. Have you checked for continuity in the kickstand switch with the kickstand up and down? Have you checked the trans switch for a making and breaking of ground in the nuetral and other gear selections?

What about the "kill" circuit in the igniter operated by the kickstand relay

  • knot
    knot Jan 26, 2013

Yes the kill circuit in the ignitor is what would cause that. The lickstand switch and trans selector work in conjunction with the relay to kill the ignitor. If you can get a schematic it will make thetroubleshooting a lot easier. If the circuits in the trans switch or kickstand switch are not satisfied then the relay will kill the ignitor. Grounding or shorted wires can also cause a problem (inspect all the wires).

SOURCE: bike runs in neutral but cuts out when a gear is selected.

Your sidestand switch kills the engine if the bike is put in gear with the sidestand down. If your stand is up and this is happening either the switch is broken or out of position. If it is broken you can twist the wires together until you can replace the switch. If it is just bent out of position you can bend it back carefully.

SOURCE: After adjusting the clutch the engine will run in

you might find that either the clutch or side stand switch is faulty, both of these switches need to be open circuit for the bike to go into gear and keep running while you select a gear (very easily tested with a $10 multi meter)normally it is the sidestand switch as this is the one that cops all the crud and water off the road,if one of these is closed it cuts the power to the cdi unit(computer) and the bike stops...hope this helps

1995 KLE500 Kawasaki: neutral blue light doesn't show and when clutch is released to engage in gear, engine cuts off

Hi, Ishmael the ignition circuit cut-off system comprising of the side stand switch, clutch switch and neutral switch has the following functions:
a. It prevents starting when the transmission is in gear and the side stand is up, but the clutch lever is not pulled.
b. It prevents starting when the transmission is in gear and the clutch lever is pulled, but the side stand is still down.
c. It cuts the running engine when the transmission is in gear and the side stand is moved down.
Periodically check the operation of the ignition circuit cut-off system according to the following tests.
With the engine turned off:
1. Move the side stand down.
2. Make sure that the engine stop switch is set to "RUN"
3. Turn the key to "ON".
4. Shift the transmission into the neutral position.
5. Push the start switch if the engine does not start the neutral switch may be faulty.
With the engine still running:
6. Move the side stand up.
7. Keep the clutch lever pulled.
8. Shift the transmission into gear.
9. Move the side stand down if the engine does not stall you may have a faulty side stand switch.
After the engine has stalled:
10. Move the side stand up.
11. Keep the clutch lever pulled.
12. Push the start switch if the engine does not start you may have a faulty clutch switch.
This check is most reliable if performed with a warmed-up engine.

1994 dodge ram 1500 truck auto trans. runs fantastic but when you put it in gear it dies, won't drive

The most common cause for the engine stall when you shift the automatic to "drive" is this:

When the automatic tranny is shifted from either "neutral" or "park" to "drive", a Torque Converter is engaged that allows the engine to idle since it is "in gear" and your drive wheels are not moving. That Torque Converter does require some additional engine power to overcome the resistance that it creates. Check and see if the RPM's in neutral are adjusted correctly so the engine has enough energy to continue to run while overcoming the drag of the Torque Converter after the shifter is moved to the "drive" position. Easy and inexpensive fix if I'm correct. Good luck.
