Question about 1983 Yamaha XJ 650

How to lower rear of xj 650 without fabrication

Just got a 83 XJ 650 and want to lower the bike. I can lower the front easy but i want to lower the rear 2 inches without doing any fabrication. Is it possible or would i have to buy new shocks for it and if so what year make and model shocks. I hear you can use 06 Harley Sportster shocks but don't know if you can lower them. Please put any info even if a little bit of fabrication.

Hi, Anonymous here are some options for lowering your bike depending on your needs and wallet:
1. Rear shock lowering kit.
2. Front fork lowering kit.
3. Shorter rear shocks.
4. Shorter front forks.
5. Thinner padded seat.
6. Lower profile tires.
Please be aware that some of these options or a combination of options will require a shorter kickstand or your stock one modified. For more information about your issue and valuable free downloads that you will need please click on the links below. Good luck and have a nice day.

I have the same bike. The shocks on the rear have adjustable preload which can lower the bike for you. Or you may even be able to find shorter shocks. Check this site for great info on these bikes. www.xjbikes.com

The VIN number should be 17 characters and found on the frame....should start with JYA

Now count off from the left to the 10th character,,,,,,,
if its an A its a 1980 model, B is an 1981, C is a 1983.

the 4H7 in the VIN means its an XJ650H model made in 1980 & 1981, Look up XJ650 on the net for more info on your bike.

Check the oil

There is a small glass inspection window on the lower flange of the clutch cover (r.h.s.)
Picture of part attached.

Leave bike to cool on the centre stand allowing all oil to drain to sump and inspect window for oil level. It should just cover the window when bike is level. If the window is blackened from oil stains and no oil movement is detected, drain oil, remove clutch cover and clean window from inside with solvent and replace, replace oil with 2200cc oil, Cheers.510a044.jpg
