Do you mix the oil with the gas? two cycle ... the only oil you have is in the gear box. If that is the case, change it in accord with Yamaha recommendations. Dont mix oil and gas = 4 cycle. The gear box and the engine share oil ... there will be a plug on the bottom of the engine and it should be changed about every 2000 miles or in accord with Yamaha recommencations. If you will go to www.yamaha.com ... you can search your model and in all proability you can find the owners manual which will answer all of your questions in detail.

Engine malfunction light came on with low oil pressure when i started car. engine light stayed on. do i just need an oil change

you need to have the oil pressure checked by using a mechanical oil pressure gauge
that will determine if it is a pump problem or an oil gauge sender unit
changing the oil will not fix the problem
you should be doing oil and filter changes every 10,000 miles and then that oil change suggestion would not figure in the problem
your problem is either mechanical or electrical but you need to determine which before you damage the engine

Gas getting into the oil

Usually this is caused by a leaking float valve in the carburetor. It seeps into the engine (when not running), past the piston rings, into the oil. Also you should check the float level.

Oil change

Just add the oil,and check it with the dipstick every half quart or so.Once you figure out the amount, write it down somewhere so next time you will know. That's all i have for you bro'.It's going to be a little slow and tedious, but if you plan on keeping the bike a long time,it is well worth it.Ride On! Good luck.

  1. Before changing or inspecting oil, be sure to stop engine and lift vehicle horizontally.
  2. With vehicle lifted up, check leakage. If leakage exists, correct it. NOTE: Whenever vehicle is hoisted for any other service work than oil change, also be sure to check for oil leakage.
  3. Remove oil filler plug (2).
  4. Remove drain plug (1), and drain old oil.
  5. Apply sealant to thread of drain plug (1), and tighten it to specified torque.Tightening torque Differential oil drain plug a: 23 Nm (2.3 kg-m, 17.0 ft. lbs.)
  6. Pour new specified oil until oil level reaches bottom of oil filler plug hole (3) as shown in figure. NOTE:

Oil light still on after oil change.

Could be a bad oil sending unit. Check to make sure it is not leaking. If you don't hear the motor start knocking when the light comes on, most likely not an internal problem, but an electrical problem.

Gas smell in oil

The white strip of fluid on the oil is a slight amount of coolant getting into the oil . The water could be from condensation on the dip stick. I would drain the oil and just put regular recommended oil in it with a new filter. I would pull the spark plugs and check for any coolant or oil residue on them. Then drive the vehicle a little and check the performance. If there is unusual noise from the engine then or blue smoke from the tailpipe the engine has internal damage.

Assuming the engine performance stays the same. There could be a fuel injector sticking intermitantly.
