SOURCE: The bottom part of the cover for my oil tank fell

I'm not familiar with the cover you're talking about. If it's made of metal, you may can get it out with a magnetic tool retriever. If it is not magnetic, you'll have to remove the tank.

The tank is not difficult to remove. I think the tank has three bolts and you'll probably have to remove the battery tray on the other side. Disconnect the hoses and remove the tank.

SOURCE: I have a 2009 harley sportster 1200c can i change

Yes, although I don't work on the later model bikes, I do believe you can do this because you have to take the derby cover off to adjust the clutch and you don't have to drain the oil to do that.

SOURCE: 2005 Harley Sportster Custom ,

If the tank cap is loose, you need to get a new seal or simply replace the entire cap. There are two marks on the dipstick. The upper mark is "FULL HOT" and the lower mark is "FULL COLD". Do not add oil to the tank when the oil is cold. As long as there is oil on the stick, ride the bike until it comes to operating temp and then add any oil if it needs any. This is a common mistake on the Sportsters. If you bring the oil up to the top mark when cold, it'll expand and blow the tank cap out and make a big mess. Do not overfill the tank but if the tank cap is loose, replace it.

Good Luck

How do i replace a starter on a 2005 harley 1200 sportster

Disconnect the battery and then the wires on the charger. Drain the transmission (left cover). After that, you can remove the shift lever connection and the clutch cover. Disconnect the clutch cable from the clutch assembly. Now you can remove your complete primary cover. After all that you will want to remove the two screws that hold the starter to the engine. Then simply put everything back in the reverser order using all new gaskets and seals and fill the transmission back up w/the proper amount and weight of oil.

How do i put oit in a 2005 harley sportster 1200

Hi Anonymous, the engine oil dipstick on Softail and Sportster models is located on the right hand front side of the oil tank and the Harley Bible says, engine should be at normal operating tempurature, let idle on jiffy stand for two minutes. Shut off engine and hold bike straight up and dipstick all the way in, correct engine oil level will be at the top full mark. Do not overfill oil tank as this will cause engine breathing issues. On Dyna and Touring models The engine oil dipsticks are located on the right front top corner of the transmission and the engine oil pan is underneath the transmission. The engine oil level is checked in the same manner as Softails and Sportsters. If you are having oil carryover or breathing issues (dipstick launch) try running oil level half way between the add and full marks, running the engine at this oil level will not harm normal operation. Good luck

I am trying to replace the battery and it seems there is no easy way to do this. The manual states that I need to remove the neg. cable from the frame. There is no way to get at it with the tools that I...

Ok, the battery sits in the frame of a sportster with the terminals towards the inside making removal difficult. With the seat and the battery cover removed, you can see the negative connection of the battery towards the front of the bike. Usually, you can get to the screw at the negative battery terminal from the right side of the bike with a long Phillips screwdriver or 10 mm socket. This is how I get them out. Always disconnect the negative first when taking the battery out. Always reconnect the negative last when putting the battery back in. This will prevent you from arcing the battery and possibly burning a hole in your oil tank. I've seen it happen on many Sportsters. Good Luck!

Checking the oil

On the older Sportsters there is a rubber pipe that is clamped onto the base of the battery box underneath. So when you unclamp the pipe the oil spews out. When replacing you just fill the oil tank and fill the primary case up to the marker screw near the bottom
