If switch requires replacement, the rear muffler and rear
exhaust pipe must be removed to remove the transmission
sprocket cover. The drive belt and transmission sprocket must
also be removed; there is not enough clearance to allow the
removal of the switch without first removing the transmission
sprocket.

I have a 2007 sportster 1200c when in first gear the nutreal light flikers is this normal thanks for your help

No this is not normal. It sounds like your neutral indicator switch is defective. It's located behind the front belt pulley cover. Remove the bolts out of the master cylinder and take the brake pedal off to get the cover off. It'll have a wire running to it. You transmission lubricant may start to run out when you take the old switch out but if you're quick, you won't have to drain the transmission. Put a pan under it just in case.

Good luck

My neutral light do not come on 2003 883 sportster

It could be either the bulb, wiring, or the neutral indicator switch. The switch is located behind the front sprocket cover. Remove the cover and it's located just forward and down on the side of the case. Unplug the wire from the switch, turn the ignition on, and ground the connector to the engine. The indicator light should come on. If not, you have either a wiring problem or the bulb is bad. If the light does come on, the switch is bad and must be replaced. Hopefully, just the wire is off of the switch.

Good Luck

How to change drive belt on harley sportster 883

Changing the drive belt on a Sporty is a snap compared to a big twin. First you'll have to remove the rear brake master cylinder and pedal or at least take the bolts out and move it out of the way. Remove the front pulley cover. Remove the rear wheel and the shock on the right hand side. You should be able to work the belt off the front pulley and get the new back on.

When you put the new belt on and tension it, make sure you keep the adjuster bolts of either side of the swingarm about the same length. This ensures that the rear wheel is aligned with the swingarm.wd4ity_1.gif

2005 xl1200 custom. neutral light is not coming on

Either the light is blown or the neutral switch is bad. The neutral switch is near the front belt pulley beneath the cover. Take the wire off and ground it with the ignition switch on. The light should light up. If not, it's probably the light blown. If it does, the switch is bad.

Good luck

HOW DO YOU FIX THE NEUTRAL LIGHT ON A 2006 SPORTSTER?

The neutral indicator switch is mounted in the right-hand crankcase directly forward of the main drive gear shaft and behind the forward belt pulley.

To access the switch, you must remove the front belt pulley cover. To get to the switch itself, you'll have to loosen the final drive belt and remove the pulley.

Disconnect the wire from the neutral switch. Turn the ignition on and ground the wire. The Neutral indicator light should light up. If not, you have an electrical problem between the neutral switch and the indicator light. If the light works like it should but will not work when on the switch, you need to replace the neutral indicator switch.

Simply screw the old switch out and install a new one.

Good Luck

Fix belt on 1200 sportster 0

I assume you want to know how to replace a final drive belt on a Sporty. First off, be glad you ain't working on a Big Twin. Sportster's are much easier than Big Twins to replace the belt on.

First, get the bike off the ground where you can remove the rear wheel. Then, remove the rear shock on the right side. Remove the bolts from the rear master cylinder and the large nut that holds the right foot peg on. Remove the front pulley cover.

Take the new belt and install it with the right leg of the swing arm through the belt. You may can work the belt over the front drive pulley. If not, use an air wrench to remove the pulley and install the belt. Retorque the pulley to 110-120 foot pounds. Remember the threads on this nut are left handed.

Reinstall the rear wheel and shock absorber. Adjust the belt to the proper tension. Then replace the front pulley cover and rear master cylinder.

Check the rear brakes for proper operation.

Good Luck

My neutral light does not always come on, how do i adjust the switch

There is no adjustment of the neutral indicator switch. Keep in mind that the switch has a spring loaded ball that simply falls into a "notch" on the shifter cam. Sometimes this shifter cam is not exactly lined up with the ball even though the transmission is in neutral. Replacing the switch may or may not solve the problem. This a common problem on the Sportster as well as the Big Twins. The neutral indicator lights just aren't that precise. If you think the switch is defective, here's how you check and replace it.
  1. Remove the front drive sprocket cover on the right side of the engine.
  2. Disconnect the electrical connector on the neutral indicator switch, it just plugs onto the switch with what looks like a little cup.
  3. Turn the ignition to the "ON" position.
  4. Ground the neutral indicator switch wire to the engine or any other suitable ground.
  5. If the neutral indicator lamp lights (and it hasn't been before), the neutral indicator switch is faulty, replace switch.
  6. If the neutral indicator lamp does not light, check for a burned out lamp, faulty wiring, or a loose or corroded connection. I've seen the filament in the little bulbs break and make contact every once in a while and not make contact at other times.
You can check the neutral indicator switch with an ohm meter. With the transmission in neutral, if you put one lead of the meter on the terminal where the wire plugs onto, and the other lead to the engine, with the meter in the "R X 1" scale, the meter should read zero or very low ohms. Shift the tranmission into any gear and the meter should read infinity or a very high ohms reading.

To replace the neutral indicator switch,
  1. You'll have to loosen the final drive belt and remove the front belt pulley.
  2. Loosen and remove the switch from the right-hand crankcase.
  3. Apply Loctite 242 (blue) to the new neutral indicator switch and tighten to 3-5 ft. lbs. or 4-7 Nm.
  4. With the new switch installed, check for proper operation prior to reinstalling the front belt pulley.
  5. Reinstall the front belt drive pulley. Use Loctite 271 (red) on the nut and tighten to 110-120 ft. lbs. or 149-163 Nm. The small drive sprocket nut lock screw tightens to 7-9 ft. lbs. or 9.5-12.2 Nm with Loctite 242 (blue) applied.
  6. Reinstall the front belt pulley cover, retighten the final drive belt, check to make sure all bolts and nuts are tight before riding the bike.
Good Luck!
