Question about 2001 kawasaki ZRX 1100 R

3 Answers

ZRX1100 P reg (1990?) Runs nice and smooth, is as ecomical as usual, serviced recently (no carb icing). When cold and on tick over, there is a clatter as if something is loose. Using choke, noise goes away at 2000 rpm. When warm, noise goes away when on tick over. Seems to come from the alternator and I can feel something when I hold the casing. Can only be heard from left side of bike. No sound coming from clutch side.

    Thanks for that Van Kerr

I've listened with clutch in and out, in gear and out of gear, no change in the noise. Sure it isn't cam chain either. Did service my self recently, so, not blowing own trumpet, I know everthing is right there. I've run a Honda CB 900 for 70,000 miles, so I'm used to all the odd noises an engine can make! I'm convinced it is to do with the alternator. What you say about that is interesting. Can you expalin more?

Hei guys,i have a zrx 1100 it's a 2001 ,when you speed up in low gear first and second ,the compression is very high and the motor opens a safety pressure release valve that internally lets a bit of pressure off from the heads, and the opening and closing of that valve sounds like a gragragra buy thrust me it is absolutely normal ,no defect there at all,it's the sound of a device.

Another thing to check - could be that your inlet camshaft journals or bearings are worn
Another possible cause of the rattle could be that at some point the camchain tensioner has been taken apart and the ball bearing which presses on the ratchet lock has dropped out. If the ball bearing has been lost, the end of the spring pops out of a hole in the side of the camchain tensioner and allows the tensioner blade to be pushed back, allowing excess play in the camchain.

Hi ...... Does noise 'go-away' if you pull in the clutch ? Could be a few things, cam chain needs adjustment or replacement (35,000 miles-ish), rotor on some Kawasakis made up of steel centre, alloy middle & steel outer. Parts can become loose, short term solution is to centre tap/spot sections but ultimately replace rotor. Have you ever had the left casing off ? Is there a gasket fitted or a thinner pattern type fitted ? When was the last time valve clearences checked/changed ? Did they change shims on that side ?
Let us know how you get on.

Sounds like something has clogged one of the pilot jets in the carburators. You can figure out which one by feeling which pipe is cold after running for a short time. Probably best to clean all 3 carbs while you have them off.

I have a 97 gsxr 600 bike has rebuilt 99 motor with 97 carbs DandD exhaust K&N filter and stage 1 dyno jet kit. it runs great over 3500 - 4000 rpm. It also idles very nice, very smooth. Sounds smooth...

if you had cam overlap then it wouldnt start and when you pushed the starter if would smash the valves together, if it runs ok every where else then i would say its a crab fuel problem and at that rev range it would be pilot jets as the mains dont come into use at that rev range you should take your bike to your local dyno center and have them run it up they will sort you problem

Bike loses power

and although it runs fine most of the time it has cut out 3 times for no apparent reason - it just loses power and then won't re-start for a few minutes. The only likely explanation seems to be carb icing - there's nothing obviously wrong with the bike otherwise. Someone told me 2 strokes don't get carb icing but that makes no sense to me. Can anyone tell me whether these bikes are prone to carb icing and if so what I can do about it?,carb icing is maybe a factor but i doubt it.ive worked on all kinda bikes for 20 years and have rebuilt a freecia last year.freccias are fickle fings so i would suggest that u make sure the fundementals are correct first.i,e float hieght, condition of carb and jets.check coorect grade of plug and ht lead & cap.cagiva do reccomend in cold weather to add a little two stroke oil in the fuel tank so this may suggest a link to carb icing.if the above checks out ok and u still have problems then it could be time to check electrical side of things.also and i know im going on like an old fart but is your piston \ bore ok.? realy advise you change piston evry 6k miles. ,,,
