SOURCE: 2003 Heritage Starter Problems

I have an 03 FLSTC, same issue. Went through four starters before 70k miles. Problem solved when I had both the gear reduction and compression releases installed. Have 40k miles on my fifth starter and no problems.

This could be a number of things, none of which will be solved without revisiting the motor again. Give some thought to the following:
Check cam and gear timing. Did you repace the cylinder and or hone it, bore it? Did you gap and offset your rings correctly? Have you checked the valve train to see if you have a valve not closing?
You see there are a number of possible causes for will have to go through one at a time and eliminate them.

SOURCE: ring burns up low compression

sounds like you are running to lean, whenever you alter your exhaust system you must rejet your carb. when you have jetted correctly your spark plug colour should be chocolate brown. white or gray is to lean black is to rich.Change your jet to a larger size, install new spark and take it on a short ride at full throttle stop and check plug colour. repeat this till plug colour is correct. hop this helps james

Why did i loose compresion on my 2001 suzuki grand vitara 2.5liter when all i did was change valve cover gaskets and spark plugs? Now there is no compression? I'm really confused

7 posts and all great answers ignored. (a new record that 7 posts)
post the compression on all 5 cyliners
post the hard numbers, !
and do it with the :
  1. throttle blocked open
  2. battery charged
  3. all spark plugs removed for max RPM and full pressure.
150PSI or more, mine does 180 easy/ H25 is mine too.

you messed up the CMP sensor then did compression wrong.
so.... do it right. this time.

i bet:
spark is dead.
or timing way off due to CMP fiddling. or its connector is not on right.

or blew fuse, due to skipping step 1 in the FSM book, for VC gasket change outs. (factory service manual , read it yet? )
step 1: pull battery neg lug, first.

1998 ford escort zx2 has compression, spark, & fuel but wont start?

any compression difference of 20 lbs or more is a serious problem. you seem like a logical fellow, so where would such a compression loss occur? rings, gasket, or valves. the standard way to find out where compression is leaking is called a wet/dry compression test. first you take readings the standard way and write them down. then you squirt a little oil into the cylinders one by one and test them again. if the compression goes up by more than 20 lbs., then the rings are the problem. if the reading stays the same as the first time then it is valves. tell that to the multiple people.

No compression in stomp 140 z140

Stuck piston rings is the most likely case.

Weed eater fb25 won't start

This blower is fuel sensitive! Gas and oil mixture has to be correct. Too much oil will cause carbon buildup in the cylinder. In my case my blower would not start after several uses this season. I checked EVERYTHING....spark, fuel delivery, air filter.....then checked the flywheel which has no separate key....the key is cast into the flywheel. Read somewhere about the carbon buildup so took the cylinder off and viola! The piston ring was firmly stuck in the piston groove plus the cylinder was carbon scored. I tried to gently pry the piston ring free but it was so firmly stuck, it broke. Not worth fixing. Take the muffler off and you will be able to see the piston ring....use a small pick or something to see if the ring is free. If not, proceed to tear down or throw out. I was able to see scoring on the piston and determine my ring was stuck this way. Remember the elements needed for successful ignition...fuel/air...spark....compression. Stuck ring = low compression. The last time you ran the blower the ring became stuck...the engine continued to run because of the engine rpm's but when you try to start at low RPM's, no luck.

If you have a good spark, and there is fuel at the plug, the only things to stop it fireing up are a sheared flywheel key knocking the timeing out, or the engine has low compression due to wear or damaged piston and ring.

Hello i have a aprillia sr50 and i brought it from brand new i ran the bike in for 300 miles and then i fully de-restricted the bike and placed a de-restricted exhaust on and a bigger jet and had the...

That looks like a REED VALVE leak.
If your 2 stroke kept coming out from the carb air intake and as you say that sometimes a back fire in the exhaust.

Check these....
  • Reed valve
  • Crank oil seal ( there might be air leak in the block )
  • Exhaust pipe ( might be already blocked )

Hope that helps you out!

hi there mwb15
have you made sure the ignition coil is producing enough voltage to fire under compression load ?

you may get a spark at the plug unloaded but under load it may be breaking down / weak making you think its got a fuel problem ?

does your system use a cdi coil system or point/condenser system ?
spark usually falls into weak spark, no spark catergory

if compression , fuel ( you replaced carb) and exhaust are ok , and you have air and vaccuum tight c/cases only things left are timming and spark

remember F A C T S

F = Fuel A = Air & ( air tight c/cases ) C = Compression T = Timming S = Spark

compression should be about 130- 140 approx if in good running order

take a look and let me know

My 98 5.7 vortez has two dead cylinders #2 #4 i have checked spark also took off injectors cleaned and checked but still dead. I ran compression check all at 135 to 140 but #2 #4 have zero.

Ooh...not good. There's zero compression on those two cylinders? Either timing is off, head gasket failure, valve seat failure, or piston ring failure.

My yz 125 made a loud popping noise when i tried to kick it up now it wont start any suggestions

They can do this from time to time. What can happen is the expansion chamber gets pumped with fuel vapor and then can be ignited, causing a large backfire. I hate to attempt to answer your question with a question, but how old is the piston and ring? A ring won't last very long in a 125. For racing, it's changed every race. For joy riding 15-20 hours of run time and it's time for a ring at least. Weak compression can make it impossible to start. If you have perfect compression the cause for the non-start could be something as simple as a burned up or fouled spark plug.

Start by re-ringing the motor (you can do this for about $25 inside of 2 hours time). Clean the carb out, clean the air filter, fill the tank with fresh fuel and replace the spark plug (NGK B9ES - from Autozone for $1.89). If the bottom end of the engine is good, the above steps should get it fired up - providing your ignition system is good, and based on the apparent backfire, I would say you have spark.

Low compression on one side, one fowled plug

A compression leak down test would tell you where the compression leak is coming from, and you should call around to find a repair shop that knows what a compression leak down test is.

A burnt or bent intake or exhaust valve, warped cylinder head or faulty head gasket, or a damaged piston or piston compression ring could cause a compression leak, and a leaking intake manifold gasket that allows oil to enter the intake through the lifter valley could foul out a spark plug, and also it could be a damaged piston or broken piston rings that is fouling out the spark plug.
