    • 1 Remove the seat from your Kodiak, using the latch on the rear of the seat. Pull the gas tank side covers off your Kodiak's frame. Unscrew the gas cap. Unscrew the bolts at the base of the gas tank, using a 10 mm socket and a socket wrench, then lift the gas tank's cover off your Kodiak. Unscrew the gas tank's mounting bolts with a 10 mm socket. Lift the tank off your Kodiak's frame and unplug the gas line.
    • 2 Unbolt the front rack and bumper from your Kodiak, using a 12 mm socket and a socket wrench. Pull the plastic rivets out of the front fender's center panel, then pull the panel away to access the headlights' wiring. Unplug the headlights from their connectors. Unbolt the front fender from your Kodiak's frame, using a 5 mm Allen wrench and a 12 mm socket.
    • 3 Unplug the spark plug cable from the left side of the motor. Unscrew the spark plug with a spark plug socket and a socket wrench. Remove the intake tappet cover from the top of your Kodiak's motor and the exhaust tappet cover from the bottom of the motor, using a 6 mm Allen wrench.
    • 4 Remove the pull-start cover from the left side of the motor, using a 10 mm socket and a socket wrench to access the timing port and the motor's crankshaft. Unscrew the plug from the timing port, positioned to the right of the crankshaft, using a flat screwdriver.
    • 5 Place a 17 mm socket and a socket wrench over the end of the crankshaft. Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise until a "T" mark is centered over the notch on the bottom of the timing port.
    • 6 Slide a .0039-inch feeler gauge between the intake valve and its rocker arm on the top of the motor. The gauge should slide between the valve and rocker arm with a small amount of resistance. If there is no resistance, the clearance between the valve and the rocker arm is too great. If the gauge cannot be inserted between the valve and the rocker arm, rotate the crankshaft one complete turn and take another measurement. If the gauge cannot be inserted after rotating the crankshaft, the valve clearance must be increased.
    • 7 Loosen the lock nut from the adjuster bolt on the top of the rocker arm, using a 10 mm box wrench. Turn the adjuster bolt clockwise with a flat screwdriver to reduce the valve's clearance or turn it counterclockwise to increase the valve's clearance. Check the valve clearance again with a .0039-inch feeler gauge. Hold the adjuster bolt steady with your flat screwdriver and tighten the lock nut against the rocker arm with your 10 mm box wrench.,
    • 8 Inspect the exhaust valve's clearance, using a .0079-inch feeler gauge. Follow the same method used to inspect and adjust the intake valve's clearance.
    • 9 Reassemble your Kodiak, following the reverse order of removal.

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Discharged battery, needs to be 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary, check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Bank angle sensor tripped and ignition/light key switch not cycled to the "OFF" position and then back to the "ON" position.
5. Faulty ignition switch.
6. Faulty starter button.
7. Faulty kickstand or clutch pull in switch/sensor.
8. Security alarm needs a reset.
9. Starter control circuit, relay, or solenoid faulty.
10. Main fuse or circuit breaker may be blown or faulty.
11. Electric starter shaft pinion gear is not engaging or over-running starter clutch slipping.

Maxim x gastank wont come off

Remove one bolt, center back, under front of seat (remove seat first)

Slightly lift back of tank, and slide rearward, off rubber dampers attached to each side of frame at front of tank.

bike wont strat got all light everthing push stater botton and it whont trune over cant get power to starter

My yamaha maxim wont start it was running two days ago and now it wont stat its 1980

need 3 things to run
1. fuel
2. air
3. spark
pull plug wire off try to start, hear snapping noise (spark) good, if not coil may be bad
make sure it has gas in it and valve is on

I have a 1982 650 yamaha maxim...when i turn my key on the head light comes on sometimes and then sometimes it doesnt and the bike wont start but i pulled a plug and dumped gas in the hole and it tried to...

I am almost sure there is a relay that is tied into that starter system that cuts the headlight when starting, I think you have a loose connection somewhere, my advise is to get a schematic for that bike and start from there.

Have an '81 Yamaha Maxim. It quit running, gets air, gas, and spark. What could be going on?

If you have all three thing it should run. If the timing is off it wont run. If the compression is down it wont run. Give us some history on the bike and how it was running before this started. Did you do any work to it before this started. Let us know.

Yamaha maxim xj 700 1985 wont start

Check the wiring inside the headlight case--that's where the wiring for the bar controls are connected into the main wiring harness. Look for loose or corroded connections. Try to get the starter working correctly, then concentrate on getting the engine to run. No-run usually means either no fuel into the cylinders or no spark to ignite the fire. Make sure to keep the battery charged while running the starter for testing.
