    I have done all of the above and with a brand new, fully charged battery, of the correct specification, the beast turns over slowly, will not start. The battery heats up and there is a definite smell of something burning or getting ready to. I let it crank until the battery wears down and nothing...

There is also a problem with the decompression timing with these bikes. The cable will stretch over time, and cause a kick back while trying to crank over instead of firing. If you research the Internet you;ll find this to be very common, especially with colder weather and bikes that have sat for long periods.

I have had the same problem on my 99 VL as well and while replacing the battery does work I have found that it is simply corrosion on the positive termal. I found this out the hard way by being stuck on the road. At that time I opened the battery cover, cleaned the contact, made sure the screw was very tight (very important) and off I went. Try this next time it happens and see if fixes the issue - cheaper than a battery. Oh, and it will help with the battery keeping its charge as well.

Hi ..... With this size of engine you'll only get approx'ly that amount of turns before the battery 'dies'. Check to see if the replacement battery is the correct one for your bike, with the correct CCA. Next go through through the basics, fully charge the battery, ensure petrol is getting to the carb (then switch it off till engine fires up), remove a plug and with it 'ground' to earth ensure a spark. If all three are correct it'll start. Big twins are notorious for non starting if left for long periods. Maybe use jump leads from a car intially.
Let us know how you get on.

Hi and welcome to the site,

Initially, have the battery checked, externally charged and load tested.

Offhand, check & clean:
  • battery terminals/connections;
  • main fuse and holder.

Good luck and thank you for asking.
