Instructions

1

Recognize the different sounds your car makes. A click usually means there is not enough current to start the car, while a whine usually means there is a misalignment. When you start to hear these noises when trying to start your car, you should speak to a mechanic to see if the starter needs replacing or can be rebuilt.
2

Check the battery first. A weak battery cannot turn the starter over. Also, clean any corrosion from the battery and make sure the grounding wire from the starter is connected. If the battery is at full strength, and you still only hear a clicking noise, then your starter needs replacing.

3

Turn on the headlights and crank the car. If your lights go out or dim when you turn the key, then you have a problem with the battery or power and not the actual starter. Your headlights remaining steady while your car clicks instead of turning over points to the starter.
4

Keep track of how often the car actually starts. If your car turns over and starts intermittently, but then does nothing at other times, you should recognize that as a problem with the starter. Sometimes tapping or shaking the ignition or starter can get your car going again, but you should replace the parts as soon as you get a chance.
5

Clean and rebuild a starter before replacing it. If you get the starter apart and any of the parts are corroded or cracked, you should invest in a rebuilt or new starter. Learn to recognize the difference between dirt and corrosion. Simple dirt and grime can be cleaned off with a wire brush.
6

Measure the amperage on the cable that runs from the battery to the starter using a multimeter. Under normal conditions, the starter should draw about one ampere per cubic inch of engine displacement (on large engines that means 200 or 200A). If the amp draw is too high or too low, then the starter needs to be replaced.

My 92 lincoln town car will not start i have replaced the starter, the neutral safety switch and the battery but when i turn key nothing happens but can jump starter and will crank

Yes there is a starter relay in the wiring diagram.
The yellow and lite blue wire goes from the starter solenoid to the relay. There is a yellow wire from the relay to a 30amp fuse. The key switch powers thru the neutral safety switch and then powers the relay on.

sounds like ur ignition barrell wiring switch (inside the car where u put the key in, theres a wiring block on the other side behind the cowelling). dont know much about mustangs to be fair, if theres a relay relating to the starter/ignition it may be worth checking out. hope this helps

There is probably a hot wire that looks like a ground wire that has been connected to the ground. Open the main fuse box at the front. You probably mistakenly put a main wire to the ground which should have been connected there or something.

when it wont start, turn your headlights on, see if they work if they dont, find out why. When it wont start, take a wire from the positive battery terminal and touch it to the small post on the starter solenoid, it should crank. If it now cranks, theres a problem between the ign switch and the starter solenoid.

Sounds like the starter solinoid especialy if the starter works when you jump it. I dont know if you can buy just a solinoid for that particular car, but its a cheap place to start if you can. If not you should be able to get a whole remaned starter for around a hundred bucks. Hope this helps.

relays are common on dodges, go in fuse box, pick another one such as horn,a/c one that you dont need to run but know is good and swap it out. try that, it could be the ign. switch too, neutral saftey switch on a auto, and clutch safety switch on a manual. make sure nothings jammed underneith clutch pedal also and your pushing it all the way down. check for dirty battery connections to. good luck!

Starter runs constantly when u connect the battery

It will be a small wire that runs from the starter selinoid to the starter, or the small wire that runs from the starter selnoid on the starter to the ignition.

Disconnect the wire at the starter selnoid, it's easiler to reach than at the ignition switch. If it no longer cranks, you know that you now have have of your problem fixed.

If that is the problem, it has to be from the firewall down to the engine. You didn't do anything under the dash. Right?
