By the year, which in this case is 2000. The factory stopped using the butterfly type on Sportsters somewhere around 1988 I think. But they are defitnely not on the 2000 unless someone has put it on. There also should be sticker on the side of the carby telling you it is a CV and what year. If all that fails take the air cleaner off and have a look down the carby, there should be a slide inside which you can lift upwards. This works of a vaccumn when the engine is running hence the constant velocity "CV"

Speed sensor location on a 2000 fat boy

Hi Anonymous, always check your instrument fuse before performing the next procedure, try cleaning your speed sensor located on top of the transmissions right side between the top cover and the chrome starter end cap on Twin Cams and on top of the engine case between the rear cylinder and the starter motor for Sportsters. Remove the the bolt that secures the sensor and pull it out of the transmission. Inspect sensor for obvious damage and repace if necessary. If sensor has no damage then wipe clean any obvious contamination like micro fiberous material with a clean rag and reinstall, torque bolt to 8 ft lbs. Maved to augusta ga from las vegas nv. my 2004 fatboy when at idle will not stay running without the choke 1/3 out

If your carb is stock, it should have a #45 slow speed jet in it for this area. I'd go to either a #48 or a #50 slow jet. I live in Forsyth, Ga. and I usually put the #48 in most Twin Cam 88 bikes that have changed the exhaust or are popping back out of the carb. If you think this is the problem try changing the jet. I don't know what the altitude is in Las Vegas and I have no idea if Harley rejets the carb for different areas. The CV carb usually is not that sensitive to altitude like the older type carbs were. The Idle Speed Stop Screw is located at the top right of the carb. Turn the inwards (clockwise) to increase the idle speed.

If you bike is fuel injected, you'lll have to take it to a shop to have this problem corrected.

Good Luck
Steve

Kelhin 40mm cv carburettor harley 1200 xls

No sweat. Screw the idle mixture screw in until it "bottoms out". Do not tighten or you will damage the screw. Back the idle mixture screw out about three turns. Install carburator and check for proper operation.
When you get the bike running, allow it to warm up and then adjust the mixture for highest smoothest idle. Set idle speed to about 1000 rpm with the throttle stop screw.
