Yes they are a problem. You can try to take it apart clean it and reconnect but it's probably the o-ring inside. Looks like a trip to Harley is in order.

How do I fine a leak on Pontiac sunfire? Won't start just gas vapors like steam?

Well, you need a quick tutorial on your fuel system. Now to find a leak, stop trying to start the engine. You are only adding electrical charge to an already dangerous situation. Now stop and think this through. Modern fuel injection requires fuel under high pressure to operate. The injectors are immersed in this pressurized gas, as are the lines leading to them from the fuel tank's fuel supply line. So just by turning the key to ON, not start, you have initiated the process to start the engine, and that means the pump has operated for 2 seconds to put the fuel system under high pressure.

Now if you follow the fuel supply line (from the gas tank) to the engine connection, start here to find a leak. It is now under high pressure from here to the injectors on the engine- one for each cylinder-it should be dripping with gas somewhere. You could even turn the key to off after the pump has ran for 2 seconds. The fuel system is designed to hold pressure in the system for about 10 to 15 minutes, before slowly bleeding off. Enough time to search for a gas leak. A couple of other things associated with the system: there will be also a fuel return line from the injector rail, it goes back into the gas tank. both the supply line and the return line often run alongside each other. There is also a fuel pressure regulator, immersed in the fuel rail, a seal on that may have started leaking. If an air breather housing, or some cover prevents your seeing the fuel system entirely, then set it aside. You should be able to find the leak. Just be careful, have lots of rags handy, happy hands are learning hands.

Smell of gas coming from under the van, no noticeable leaks.

Hi, this is typically caused by an evap system vent valve that is stuck open. This will allow the fuel vapors from the tank to escape and cause this smell. This can also occur if the vehicle is overfueled.
If the car is not over fueled, you need to replace the evap system vent valve.

I have a fuel leak around the tank somewhere. It drips. HOWEVER, when I release the pressure from the tank via the fill cap, the leak stops. I can still smell fuel, BUT it does not leak visually. Full tank...

these late model cars with fuel injection actually pressurize the tank to have a staedy fuel pump flow, so a leak by pressure is possible. hence a leak at full or 1/4 tank. you could have a tanlk with a hole in it. are you in a northern state where rust is a normal thing on cars 5 to 10 yeaqrs old. do they use a lot of salt on the road in the winter moths? you could have rust.

Smell gas in car

Look for fuel leaks in the engine bay or back by the tank where you fill up the the tank. A little bit of gas will go a long way so if you had spilled a little while removing the nozel at the gas station the filler neck will disperse of it, sometimes it gathers on the inside of the fender, and causing for a smell that may not be an issue. On the other hand if you notice the smell under the hood you may have a leaking fuel line, check to see if anyone has replaced the fuel filter recently sometimes the technician does not tighten the lines securely causing a little fuel leak. other times its just a little fuel spray from not releasing the pressure before removing the filter may have sprayed the fuel on the car onto maybe the insulation. One thing to do is look under the car while it is running myabe after filling it up to check for leaks. If your notice a drip while the A/C is running dont be alarmed as this is the condensation dripping off as it is supposed to.
