Assuming that you have done a compression test and both cylinders have ample compression to run( adverage 150 psi) check that both plugs are actually sparking. If this is a fuel injected model check fuel pressure, check for voltage at both injectors on the common color wire to each. If all is good there you can swap the front injector to the rear(provided they are the same part-most are) and see if the dead cylinder moves with it. If it does the injector is bad.

SOURCE: Engine skips, won't go over 55 mph. Works fine below that.

Hi ..... Go through the above list, pay particular attention to fuel delivery ie blocked breather in tank, any filter fitted to tap or change in line filter if fitted. Easy to check, take off fuel delivery to carb (place container to catch fuel), start bike and fuel should come out a strong contant flow.
Let us know how you get on.

SOURCE: 2007 yamaha virago won't start - replaced spark

it's not that your not gettin gas it's that the gas is not getting thru the carbs to the engine. your bike will probably start w/choke on and then die, your jets are clogged and happens to most bikes that are stored w/gas in the carbs.,,,clean them if you know how or take it to a trusted mech...good luck to you...Tim

Take the carburetors apart and either rebuild them or clean them thoroughly.

SOURCE: 2002 Dyna wide glide. Will not IDLE

not running for a year! You have a varnish buildup in the low end circuit of the carb. You will need to remove the carb and do a full teardown of the carb to properly rectify this problem. SOMETIMES we are able to free up the passages by putting SEA FOAM cleaner in the tank , fill her up with fresh fuel and ride through the tank and it will clear up. SEA FOAM can be purchased at an auto parts store and is sometimes very effective. 1/4 cup to full tank fuel.

SOURCE: Rebuilt carbs. flooding rear cylinder

My bike started doing the same thing. I pulled the carbs put new kits in them and it still does the same thing. It does not seem like a spark issue because the fuel consumption would not be this bad, but the floats looked good. The needle valves and seats are new. I am not sure what to think at this point. I even replaced the intake manifolds and flushed my fuel system. It starts good initially. It is almost like the fuel pump is pushing to much pressure and over coming the needle valve. Has anyone seen this before?
Thanks,

I have a 1992 gmc Sonoma 4.3 vin z, I ran out of gas put gas it started just fine 3 times stoped filled tank, drive 1.2 miles it died , and won't start, replaced fuel pump , checked all fuses

Test for spark at the plugs and post back. Also, spray a little carb cleaner into throttle body and then try to start it to see if it is a fuel issue.

I have a 87 4x4 pathfinder with new plugs, fuel filter, cap and wires. Started missing and eventually stopped running. After an hour it started and ran fine for a while and started missing again. Ha

Do you know for sure if you are loosing fuel or spark when it stops running ? Is the fuel pump loosing power ?
Are you smelling gas from inside the cabin ?

Blue smoke on cold start

If it is using no more that a quart of oil per 3,000 miles it is normal. If using more that that, the engine is likely worn. You can have a mechanic perform both a wet and dry compression test , on you engine, to know for sure. The cost should be about the cost of a tune up. The spark plugs could be changes at the same time. if they show wear.

You next need to do a leak down test which will answer your question about the low compression.

2008 dyna 3.000 miles. runs on rear cylender only.swaped enjectors it the same runs on rear cyl only

Sounds like you're not getting a pulse to the front injector lead. Check the connection (Injector wire ) from injector back for broken area or bad corroded pins.

Loses spark intermittant

100,000 miles? Maybe rebuild time!! You sure it isn't something simple like a plugged gas tank vent? (Try it with the cap off) Bad plugs? Wires? Coil? Plugged fuel filer or in-tank screen? Are you absolutely sure it's a spark problem and not fuel related?

Wont start after 6 mos. I changed the spark plug, drained & added fresh gas, checked the fuel filter... Kicks over fine. Ran for 4 seconds, then it died. Always ran & started great before.

With a new plug and fresh gas it should start. Check to make sure there isn't a kill switch turned off or that the gas petcock from the tank to the carb is on.

How did you check the fuel filter? Disconnecting it from the fuel line that goes to the carb is the best way, making sure the gas is turned on under the tank. Bleed off a little gas into a can or something just to make sure the filter isn't plugged.

The last thing I'd do is take off the air filter and spray a little starting fluid in the carb. It may start and run several times if there is old gas in there somewhere. Remember the bowl on the carb is probably still full of old gas. After some fresh fuel reaches the plug it should start and continue to run.

(You might drain the bowl on the carb of ols gas before you go any further)

Good luck!

Wont start

Start with emptying the gas tank totally. Refill with fresh gas/oil mix. Todays gasoline ain't that great.
Also after putting in fresh gas and priming if it doesn't fire at all pull the spark plug and if it is dry, pour a about a tbsp. of mix gas in the plug hole. put the spark plug back in and see if it will fire.
