:I shorted out my kdc 128 head unit and i switched all the fuses but it still wont turn on. any ideas?

I have a kenwood KDC 128 cd player. i connected all the wires and plugged the wire harness into my truck, the radio lit up and everything worked. i then took it out and sautered all the connections and put it back in the dash. when i turned the truck on, i noticed a spark and saw a spark and the radio shut off and i realized one of the wires had grounded itself on the in dash harness. i took it out and taped all the connections with electrical tape, put the radio back in and now it wont turn on. i checked the fuse in the back of the radio and the fuse in the fuse box and neither was blown. any one have any answers as to how to get it working again? i also took the radio apart and looked at the circuit board and nothing was black or appeared burnt.

Firstly, the main wires from the KDC-128 you need to check are:

RED - this should be connected to the vehicle's +12v IGNITION wire.
YELLOW - this should be connected to the vehicle's =12v BATTERY wire.
EARTH - i) some tuners will only earth when the tuner itself, is screwed into the vehicle's chassis (i.e. a metal mounting bracket); ii) some tuners require the BLACK wire to be attached to the vehicle's chassis (i.e. a metal mounting bracket).

Secondly, if the above wires are connected correctly, then you should suspect the fuse on rear of the tuner has blown (even if it LOOKS ok). Replace and see what happens.

Thirdly, if all above are ok, then you have a short somewhere on the vehicle.

SOURCE: KDC 128 CD Player

It could be that the player is going into protect mode. This is normally due to a short in a speaker cable, or one or more of your speakers is blown. Try disconnecting all of your speaker cables at the speaker end and make sure the connectors don't touch. Power it up again and see if it stays on. Bear in mind you won't hear anything. If it powers up. Carefully plug each speaker back in. It will power off if you plug in the dud! If it still doesn't power up. disconnect all of your speaker cables at the player end. If it powers up this time one of your cables is shorted. Same as the speakers, plug one pair of wires in at a time to find the dud. If it's still switching off. It could be a blown circuit on the output stage of the amp. Here's a silly question. Does the player get hot? All this assumes that you have had this player working with these cables and speakers before. If not check that the speakers are the correct rating (Resistance in Ohms) for the player. And lastly here's where you can get a manual http://www.kenwoodusa.com/Support/Car_Files/#_

SOURCE: Got a new Kenwood KDC-128

you need to hook the yellow wire off the back of the radio up straight to the battery this keeps memory power to the head unit then wire the wires in color coded sequence red to red black to black so on and so forth if this doesnt fix it you might want to think about replacing head unit

KDC-MP4032 head unit wont turn on

hi, seeing that your kenwood showed up "protect" you may have an audio circuit/amplifier fault within the unit. try resetting the unit to see if unit comes "on" again. if the unit comes on and protect flashes again, then you definitely have an internal audio circuit fault. if not then check all power connections(yellow and red wire voltages, as well as ground connection), as well as the condition of the face pins!

I hooked up my kenwood kdc 128 cd player and nothing works

i had the same problem as you, i own a 98 ford escort, and i couldnt find a wiring diagram that matched the ones in my car . i managed to connect the constant (red) and switched (yellow) to the wires in the car but i had made a mistake with the ground (black) . so i re connected it to where its suppose to go so now the head unit actually lights up and turns on.

now i have another problem because my head unit doesnt stay on for any longer than 1 mintute
