Bike stutters when started

I have a Yamaha xj900s diversion, the needle of the rev counter jumps to10000 rpm`s when engine is turned on and then suddenly drops to 0 rpm`s, +- 3-5 seconds later the whole process repeats itself. The bike starts easy and idles good but as soon as you start to turn the throttle to 5000 rpm`s the engine starts to stutter and dies. If throttle is turned quickly the bike also starts to stutter, can this be the throttle positioning sensor that causes this, if so how can it be tested?

the bike hates damp rainy days it will run rough go in and out as you throttle wont idle and cut out plus when it does idle the tickover needle will jump every couple of seconds

The 900S diversion has a self diagnosis device. When the tacho cycles as yours is doing the Throttle Position Sensor requires attention. If it cycles to 9000 rpm and 0 there is an ignition fault that needs looking at.

Is it cheap or expensive to repair a Yamaha XJ900S? are you in the UK?

Hi, Anonymous I suppose that all depends on how much "DRACHMA" you have at the time of repair it's all relative to how bad you want it fixed, stay away from dealers and find a nice reputable independent shop as for me being in the Queens Realm sorry mate I live on the sunny coast of Florida U.S.A. but I used to live in Thames House right on the lock in Marlow, Buckinghamshire about 56 km NW of London for more information about your question and valuable "FREE" downloads that you will need please click on the links below. I have a yamaha xj900s diversion 1996 & when I go to start it petrol comes out of the carburettor housing any idea what would cause this thanks ****

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Damaged or restricted fuel tank venting system.
2. Loose float bowl screws.
3. Damaged float bowl o-ring.
4. improper fuel level in the float bowl.
5. Worn or dirty inlet valve or seat.
6. Damaged or leaking float assembly.
7. Particle contamination in inlet fitting cavity.

Xj900s vibration, between 3,500-4,000 revs can this be fixed,Ive heard this is standard with this bike

Hi I dont have a solution to your problem with the vibration with your xj900s,but I have the same problem with my xj900s the screen vibrats at around 3000revs.Ireplaced the bolts and rubber nut gromets a little better, but still has vibration. So it might be right that this is standard with the xj900s.If you find out the solution could you post it or email me .regards ken Australia.

Tip of pilotscrew is broken off and stuck in carburettor of Yamaha XJ900s diversion '2000

spot weld a screw to it using a MIG welder, make sure you take the carb off the bike 1st, and that its free from fuel, or vapours, else it will catch fire, once a screw is welded to it, use that screw to undo your other, as they are now classed as a complete screw, it should come out with ease.

Hope this helps!

94 yamaha xj 600 wont rev over 6000 rpm

You bike is running rich on the main jet. Go down on the main jet size. Alternate to that, move the jet needle clip up one notch.

Go to the site below and you can download a free PDF service manual and parts manual for your bike. The service manual is 45th from the bottom of the Yamaha listings and the parts manual is 19th from the top. Now you can tune the carb and adjust the timing chain slack and a whole lot more. It saves my keystroke finger a lot of work also.

Please rate this solution. Thanks glouellette!

Error code,

The needle jumoing to 7,000 on the RPM dial means that the EXUP valve is stuck. This is a common problem with Fazer 1000's. Although Yamaha don't recommend any maintenence I strip and clean mine regularly to stop it from sticking. According to Yamaha - a sticking valve is not a serious problem and the bike can be ridden until you get time to fix it.
