Black exhaust is from too much fuel. You may have a carburator float sticking. That will cause excess fuel to go into the cylinder, and if it can't "compress" it, it will knock.

THERE ARE TWO EARS INSIDE THE WHEEL AND THE SPEEDO DRIVE UNIT HAS TO FIT IN THIS EXACTLY OR IT WILL NOT GO BACK TOGETHER.

sounds like your coil is bad, could be few other things but coil is most common, and least expensive.if memory serves me right its mounted under tank( just follow plug wire to coil) will cost around $40.00 used and $80.00 new

I have had my 2008 Nighthawk 250 up to 70mph with some left over. I just got it so I haven't really run it full throttle yet ( 75 miles on the OD ) I weight 300 lbs. I would guess 80 on a flat road. I felt comfy at 70 but this is my 5th bike. I bought this one for the gas mileage and 1 yr. warranty. I will try actual top speed on the Interstate in about 1000 miles. Hope this helps. I like the bike. Chris
