Question about Harley Davidson FXD - FXDI Dyna Super Glide Motorcycles

I am putting points back in my 1983 shovel head. there is only one wire coming from the points. which terminal on the coil does it connect to?

Diagram assemble for pushrod tubes on 1983 shovel head

corks top and bottom. small tube on top with o-ring down. large tube on bottom with spring and cap up. slide pushrod through tubes. Hold tubes up with a piece of wire and adjust pushrod. Remove wire and extend tubes from lifter block to head. Depress cap and install spacer between spring cap and top of top tube.

If you have changed sparkplug and coil and cleaned flywheel, you probably have a kill wire problem. Disconnect kill wire from coil and try again.

I have a 75 iron head wont get spark but has power going to coil

If the condenser has failed, across the points, it will not spark. turn the engine until the points open. Turn on ignition, with a small screwdriver, open the points and there should be a small spark and the plug should also spark. If it doesn't, with a 12volt 5Watt bulb, connect one side to the frame/engine and with the other wire go to the points. When open the bulb should light and go out when closed. If all seems OK, replace the coil as they are notorious to fail when warm. My 1965 Shovel had me going round in circles for a brief while as well. Keep logical about your fault finding.

77 shovel head plugs carbon fouled

Hi Anonymous, and the usual suspects are:
1. Plugs in bad condition or partially fouled.
2. Spark plug cables in bad condition or leaking.
3. Spark plug gap to close or to wide.
4. Faulty ignition coil, module and or sensor.
5. Battery nearly discarged.
6. Damaged wire or loose connections at battery terminals especially the ground cable at BOTH ends, ignition coil, or plug between ignition sensor and module.
7. Intermittent short circuit due to damaged wire insulation.
8. If your bike has a CKP sensor you must leave both plugs in
head and check for spark with a 3rd plug. Good luck.

I have a 1974 harley I can't get it to fire. One port on the coil (bottom) has real slight fire. The top nothing? fxt lowrider

Test the primary side of the coil. Disconnect the small wires from both ends of the coil. Then, use a digital volt ohm meter to test the resistance of the coil. Put the meter's function switch in OHMS, R X 1 scale. Touch one meter probe to each one of the terminals on the ends of the coil. The meter should read between 5-6 ohms of resistance. If it does this, reconnect the white wire to the top terminal of the coil. Take a plain piece of wire and strip about an inch of insulation from each end. Connect one end of this wire to the bottom terminal of the coil. Put both spark plug wires in the coil with a spark plug in each wire. Make sure the plugs are grounded to the engine. Turn the ignition switch on and MOMENTARILY touch the wire you connected to the bottom terminal of the coil to the engine and then take it away from the engine. When you take the wire away from the engine ground, you should see a spark at both plugs. If not, the coil is bad. Have you cleaned and checked the gap on your points? Clean the points using a thin piece of stiff paper like a piece of index card with a bit of alcohol on it. Set the gap on the points to 0.020". Make sure the gray wire from the points is connected to the bottom terminal of the coil.

I have a 1979 xlh sporty took bike apart to paint on re assembly i hooked up coil wires wrong had no spark fixed wires but could i have killed my coil still no spark.

Ok to test the coil, remove all wires from the small terminals on the ends. Use a digital volt ohm meter and put the function switch in OHMS, R X 1. Touch one meter lead to each of the small terminals. Your meter should read between 2-3 ohms as the '79 model had electronic ignition.

To further test the coil, reconnect the two white wires to one of the small terminals. On the other side, make a jumper wire. Connect the jumper wire to the other small terminal. Put the plug wires into the towers and put a set of spark plugs in the wires lying on the heads with a good ground. Now, turn the switch one. The terminals with the white wires on it should be "Hot". MOMENTARILY, ground the jumper to the engine and take it back loose. When you take the wire loose, you should see a spark at the plugs. If you do, the coil is good and your problem lies elsewhere.

I need a wiring diagram for the coil and distributor on a 1.8 ea81

Yellow wire goes to the Negative coil terminal, Black/white wire goes to Postive coil terminal. I think this is what your asking?

My 72 sportster is getting power to the coil but no power to the terminal leading to the points. Any advice?

Well, power only comes in from one side of the coil and if the points are closed, your meter will not read voltage on the other side. Make sure the points are open when checking for voltage.

To check the coil's primary circuit. Take all wires loose from the small terminals at either end of the coil. Using a DVOM (digital volt ohm meter), put the meter in OHMS, R times 1 scale. Connect one meter lead to each terminal of the coil, make no difference which one goes where. The meter should read between 5 and 6 ohms of resistance. If it reads "Infinite" the coil is open and if it read "Zero" the coil's primary circuit is shorted.

The easy way to test the coil is put a spark plug in the plug wire and lay it on the head. Make sure it has a good ground. Turn the engine over until the points are closed. Turn on the ignition switch and use something to open the point. Each time you open the points, you should see a spark at the plug. If not, you've probably got a bad coil.

Coils on a Le Mans 3

one on each coil. The other a dual spade connection which should join together the two coils and the live terminal coming through from the ignition module. Is this correct. I have a broken screw cap for the HT lead on one that needs replacing I'll try to source one if not does anyone one have a spare lying about.Cheers Guys,I am trying to get the beast firing again, having problems, I am using a Newtronic system.,Knock the centre out of an old plug so that you can slide a scewdriver or similar through it. Put a timing disc on the front of the engine (alternator) Rock the engine back and too past tdc noting position, say 2.00mm either side of tdc (with a dial gauge on top of the screwdriver). Centre, then touch the flywheel here with a drill point. Turn engine back required amount (34 degree?) and touch flywheel with drill point again. I do different colours left and right than I know which cylinder Im looking at. Ignore every other mark on the flywheel. Set to these marks at 5000 rpm with strobe Can't set Newtronics static ,,,

the r terminal only has 12 volts on it when you are cranking the starter over. so the wire that goes to the r terminal goes to the plus side of the coil then the wire that come from the switch also goes to the coil this wire should have only about 8.5 volts on it when switch is in run position the r terminal puts 12 volt on the coil while cranking the motor over the when the switch is in the run position there is 8.5volt on the points so you don't burn the points out the diode kit i don't no why you need it unless the don't what any back feed volt to the r terminal in the run position so i would put it in line(series) with the r terminal wire the flow on the diode is from the -<- this side of the diode goes to the coil
