SOURCE: fill transmission

Through the plug you look through to check the primary chain tension. About a 2" opening near the top center of the primary cover. This is the same as all Sportsters.

How do you change the drive belt on a 2006 hd sporster

Remove the rear wheel and then remove the primary chain, the clutch, the engine compensating sprocket, and the chain adjuster as an assembly and then remove the primary chaincase housing. Support the bike under the rear fork and engine and then remove the pivot shaft and the spacer THEN slip the belt off the transmission sprocket and then install a new drive belt over the transmission sprocket and proceed to reinstall the pivot shaft and spacer after which you can remove the support holding the engine and rear fork and install the primary chaincase housing, the primary chain assembly and the primary chaincase cover and fill the primary chaincase with lubricant up to the bottom of the clutch diaphragm spring. Install the rear wheel and adjust the belt to the proper deflection dimension and confirm tat the rear wheel is properly aligned side to side.

2005 xbr1200 primry oil is comin out of cluch cable at the adjuster cable nuts, primry chain went really tight after oil change and oil is spiting out exsaust.back fires after plugs were changed the bike...

There is ALOT of questions here - what oil did they change? The primary chain(transmission oil) or the engine oil? Did they adjust the primary chain? They might have drained the primary oil out and not put more back in - you might be running a dry primary - causing HUGE damage. THe engine could be working trying to turn the trans that has no lubrication. - of course they could have over filled the oil on your bike and it is forcing it\'s way into the combustion chambers and into the exhaust too.

Primary chain hitting case on clutch housing, cable nearly fully adjusted clutch slips if adjust any more. bad grinding noise from chain hitting case can i adjust clutch any more in housing?

The primary chain adjustment has nothing to do with the clutch. Take the small upper inspection cover off the primary cover and use your finger to check the primary chain tension. It should have 3/8 to 1/2 inch up and down movement in the top run of the chain when the engine is cold. To adjust, loosen the lock nut on the primary chain adjuster on the bottom of the primary case. Turn the screw upward to tighten the chain, downward to loosen. Once set, tighten the locknut.

To adjust the clutch, loosen the clutch cable adjuster as much as you can. Remove the derby cover from the primary cover. Remove the spring and the locknut. Turn the adjuster screw counterclockwise as far as it will go. Turn it back in 1/4 turn and replace the lock nut and the spring. Replace derby cover. Adjust the clutch cable so that you have about a 1/8 inch play at the hand lever.

Can you change final drive belt on a softail without removing primary

No, you must remove the outer primary, the clutch assembly, primary chain and adjuster, the compensator sprocket, the starter, the inner primary, the rear wheel and the swing arm to change the final drive belt. It's a major job.

I HAVE A HARLEY SPORSTER 1200, WILL NOT SHIFT OUT OG GEAR, STAYS IN HIGH GEAR....HELP PLEASE..............

Sounds like the shifter pawl is broken. This is common in Sportsters. You'll have to pull your primary drive to repair it.

Disconnect your battery, drain the primary, loosen the primary chain adjuster and remove the outer primary cover. Take the engine sprocket nut loose. Remove the snap ring in the clutch assemble and remove the throwout bearing. Remove the mainshaft nut that holds the clutch assembly on. This nut has LEFT HANDED threads. Lift the engine sprocket, primary chain, and the clutch assembly out of the primary case.

Now, you can get to the shifting mechanism and determine what the problem is.

Good luck

Is there a certain brand or weight of oil I should be using in my 06 sporster 1200 custom?

20w/50 synthetic

04-up is 3 qts.

Drain oil hot, r&r filter, put in oil,........let a couple ounces drain out of the hose to bleed the air out to prevent cavitation inside the oil pump.... run engine about 10 minutes, shut off & let sit for about 2 minutes. Check oil level with bike upright, oil should be at top mark on dipstick, fill as needed.

Don't forget about the Primary Oil...1 qt.

Also remember, there is WAY more to maintaining your bike than just an oil change, belt tension, throttle cable lube and adjustment, clutch adjustment, clutch cable lube and adjustment, primary chain adjustment, brake inpsection, tire pressures, fork oil every 10k miles, steering neck bearing lube and adjustment every 10k miles, etc.

How do i check the primary oil in my 2005 harley davidson electra glide. i changed the oil and added 32oz of oil as directed by the owners manual but i cannot see the oil in the clutch inspection cover....

if you put 32 oz of primary oil in the primary case then you have enough oil in there already. Never put more then 1 full quart or you will have leak issues. The way I do it is to have the bike upright and level and look through the primary inspection cover and as long as the chain is in the oil a little bit then your fine.
