alrighty, I had the same issue with my bike. It took days of tracing the issue with a volt meter and I discovered an intermittent short that would "fry" my coi. This made the bike not start and when I replaced the coil, because I had removed the old coil and moved the wires the issue disappeared for a short time. It is known that SOMETIMES when the coil is mounted the two wiresthat go to the coil somhow get stretched. This over time cause an intermittent short and the coil is rendered "dead". The Fix: 1.get a replacement coil. 2.you need 6 inches of #18 wire 3. two aluminum wire splicers and two aluminum circle fittings for the coil posts. 4.take off the old coil. 5.cut back the wires that go to the coil about an inch. 6. using the aluminum splicers splice the wires making them about 3 inches longer. 7.splice in the aluminum circle fittings. 8.mount the new coil. 9. fire the bike up. Enjoy riding.

Number 2 accessories fuse blows when I start bike

Hi Michele, you have a hard/dead short that should be easy to find generally they are the easiest. Time to get out your test light and connect it to the power side of the, circuit breaker or the blown fuse receiver, start by tracking the out bound wire towards the ignition switch and beyond if necessary, when the test light quits lighting you are very close to your short. I have a 2003 cl1200, the battary is new, when the bike sits for two days the battary gets weak , if longer goes dead, please help me

If you have an alarm it could be draining it, but it sounds more like a relay or something is sticking creating a drain on the battery, or you have a short somewhere. You can run a parasitic draw test to determine the problem---I hope this helps.

Hello, have a 2003 XL 1200 custom that wont start, what is happening when you kick it over and it starts clickin then starts to die away like battery going dead. cheers Jes

I think you hit the nail on the head, Jes. Sounds exactly like your battery is going dead. Just to make sure, take the battery out of your bike and take it to an automotive parts store. Have them test the battery. They'll usually do this free of charge. If your battery is over two years old, it's probably bad.

Now, if you purchase a new battery, get the highest CCA (cold cranking amps) battery you can get. Also, consider the purchase of a Battery Tender or a Smart Charger that will connect directly to your battery via a short pigtail. Do not use a regular automotive battery charger. Put the pigtail on your battery and when you get of the bike, plug the charger to the battery. This will increase your battery life tremendously.

Good Luck
Steve

1999 harley sport fuse box location?

The fuse / breaker box is located in either of two places on a Sporty. Either under the seat or behind the triangular plate on the left side of the bike.

Bike is dead. battery ok. not even a headlight???

The fuses are probably behind the trianglular plate on the right side of the bike. It may be that the bike has a security system on it as well and something has tripped it preventing it from being started.

Trying to swap motor from a 2001 xl 1200c to a 1995 xl 1200 and having trouble with wiring new motor to older bike anyone know the difference?

I have schematics for both year model bikes. If you want more information, you'll have to be more specific as to the exact trouble you're having. There's not that much difference between the two engines. If you want a copy of the schematics, contact me directly and remind me of the year and models of the two bikes. wd4ity@bellsouth.net

I would guess stale gasoline or fuel. Try fresh fuel in the tank. If this doesn't clear the problem, you could need to have your carburetor or fuel injection system cleaned. I'm not even sure if they put fuel injection on Sportsters since I don't work on fuel injected bikes. I mostly work on the older bikes like Panheads, Shovelheads, Evos. Not too many Sportsters but have worked on a lot of Ironhead Sportsters. Try the fuel first. It's a cheap fix. Hope it works for you. Good luck with the knee replacement. My wife had one knee replaced and it works great.

1996 Sporty Sport Oil Leak

Without seeing the bike its really hard to tell but It could be leaking from a sensor (crank position?) and that would just require a new gasket or O-ring. If its your case halves leaking then you are talking a major tear down which could cost $800 to $1200 dollars not including whatever parts they find need replacing.
