Your clutch plates have lasted 25 years. It is probably time to get some new plates. Have your dealer get you a set of Barnett clutch plates.

Six yrs, is a long time. You really should change the oil. Oil also breaks down like gasoline does. Wet clutches require an oil containing certan sdditives. Old or regular motor oil is not well tolerated. Make sure you have free play on the clutch lever., about 1/8 in. - good luck- Ned

SOURCE: can not get clutch chain

I assume you're talking about the primary chain. To get the primary chain off, you must remove the compensator sprocket from the engine shaft and disassemble the clutch, which takes a special tool to compress the clutch spings, and remove the outer clutch basket. The outer clutch basket is held on by a large nut on the inside that has left-handed threads on it. Once you have all that off, you can remove the four "trapdoor" bolts and pry the transmission out.

Good Luck

SOURCE: i adjusted the clutch on

if you adjusted your clutch correctly and it's still slipping, it's time for clutch plates.

To adjust the clutch, find the cable adjuster in the center of the clutch cable. Loosen the locknut and turn the adjuster inwards and all the slack you can in the cable.

Pull the derby cover off and remove the spring and the locking nut. Turn the screw in the center all the way out counterclockwise. Then go back in 1/4 turn. Reinstall the locking nut and spring and the derby cover.

Go back to the cable adjuster and turn it outwards until you have about 1/8" freeplay. work the clutch a couple of times and recheck the freeplay.

If the clutch still slips, time for new friction plates.

Good Luck

Sounds like its time for some new clutches. You can try to adjust it to where you have a lil slack in the lever, which MAY help, but most llikely its clutch plates time.

1997 sportster 1200 xl does not want shift some times

Pull the outer primary, and remove the front sprocket, and the clutch drum assy. You will see a oval shaped washer type thing with several cut outs on it. This is the shifter eccentric. They are usually held on by a slip on c-clip,and are notorious for coming off, causing shift problems.Inspect it for wear...(they usually get chewed up by the starter ring gear on the clutch drum)..and replace if needed. Also, when replacing it,..use a regular C-clip,instead of the original "slip clip" and save yourself some headache down the road!! Good Luck

High pitched squeal

It most likely is a worn brake pad. Clutch will tend to slip with out any squeal since it is a wet clutch. Try applying the front brake then the rear brake to determine which is squealing. Pads are about $45.00 per wheel, I just did mine friday.
