SOURCE: wont run on prime setting on fuel tap

On most Japanese bikes, the PRI position allows fuel to flow from the tank to the carbs even if the engine is not running. In the ON position, the fuel gate valve would only allow fuel to flow if there is vacuum which of course would mean that the engine is running. There is normally a vacuum hose from the intake manifold of cylinder 1 that leads back to the fuel valve that triggers the internal diaphragm to open the fuel line.

If we are to assume that for some reason the PRI position is blocked, then switching the "fuel tap" to this position would not allow fuel to go down the carbs. Thereafter, the engine used what fuel was left inside the carbs (100 meters) and the engine died. Switching the "fuel tap" back to ON again would not allow fuel to flow down from the tank to the carbs since there is no vacuum and very little vacuum when starting the bike; and the bike would not start, no fuel inside the carbs.

Correct action of course would mean overhauling the "fuel tap" and initially setting it to PRI and then to ON soon as the engine is running on its own. Temporary remedy/workaround would be to manually feed fuel to all the carbs with the use of an external container with rubber hose/fitting. Alternately, you can try spraying starter fluid or car injector cleaner. This should be done with the air cleaner off. A word of caution, in some older bikes I have worked on, this condition would result to an overflow of the carbs soon as the engine starts indicating that the float(s) inside the carbs are sticking.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

SOURCE: hi i have a drz 400 sm which will only start and

I had this problem too. Further investigation showed that I forgot to reattatch the vacum tube that runs from the top of the carb to the fuel valve, sucsion from this lets the fuel through.

Which way is on position for gas on my 2005 katana gsx600f

Arrow pointing up on the knob is (RES) reserve to the side is (PRI) prime which bypasses the vacuum part of the tap and ON is downwards.use prime only when you have run out of fuel n on and you need to switch to reserve ,prime will let you refill the carbs without running the engine.

Gas tank

no...Full is on...res is reserve...Pri is Prime.
Do not leave it on prime !!! This is for re-filling the carbs when they have been emptied.
It is a vacuum operated tap, when switched to full or reserve, fuel only flows when the engine turns flows fuel all of the time.
The tap should be set to full unless fuel is running low.
Leaving it on prime when not running can lead to serious engine damage !!!

Why is fuel draining into my oil?

the float valve that cuts the petrol off is not sealing so the carbs(s) flood into the air box then runs down the engine breather pipe in to the engine.dont use the bike as the enginewill be damaged. or if you have a diaphram fuel tap the diaphram has gone, take the petrol pipe off the tap there should be no fuel coming out when the tap on or on res if there isfuel coming out you need a new tap

I have a 78 650 Yamaha what position is off on the pit-****. I see res, on and pri

Hi, there is no off position on this tap, it is vachume opperated which means no fuel will flow from the tap in either the on or reserve position unles the engine is being turned over, so removing the fuel pipes from the tap will not cause any fuel to leak from the tap when in either of these positions, it will however flow in the prime position so avoide this position while the fuel lines are removed, if the fuel does flow in the on or resrve poss, the diapram is faulty and will need replacing

Where should the gas tank switch be located for operating and when storing? There is three locations but I cannot tell which is which except the res. The other is RPI? I am not sure what that is. It also...

The three positions will be,
on normal riding.
res(reserve, when it runs low).
pri (prime).
so leave it on or res for riding and storing, it will be a vacumn opperated tap that turns itself off when the engine stops and there is no longer vacumn.
Prime is for initial priming of carbs only, do not ride it or store it on prime.
The second key may be for a steering lock on the side of the head stem.

Hi, On the fuel tap what is the Prime position function.

You have a vacuum operated fuel tap. It should have 'on' , 'res' and 'prime'.
In the prime position fuel will always flow from the tank. In the other positions the engine must be running to allow fuel to flow. If the bike has been standing for a few days, fuel will evaporate from the carbs and the bike can be difficult to start. By switching to prime for a minute, the carbs are replenished and starting should be easy. Dont forget to return the tap to on or reserve once started.

What position on fuel lever is off there is fuel on, res, prime?

It is a vacumn opperated tap, fuel should flow on res or on only when the engine is running. fuel will flow on prime whether the engine is running or not.
There is no off, if fuel flows from res or on when the engine is stopped it needs a fuel tap kit. Also it is best to fix it as they have a habit of flooding the sump with fuel.

What position on the petcock is on off or res on a 93 katana gsx600f

There is no OFF, you have RES toward front , ON is all the way down, and prime toward back, PRI is used when it has been sitting for awhile. RES and ON wont let gas out unless bike is runnig. There is a vac hose on back of petcock that lets ON and RES work it must be connected..
