Engine is running erratically

I changed the ignition electrical components today as the original kept cutting out.

the engine starts but is running erratically as if only on one cylinder?

You have probably already done this, but...
Recheck your connections to the new components.
Then check your spark plug & spark plug wire on the non firing cylinder. Next you need to check out the coil.

The engine light comes on after start up then about 3 sec. goes off and the bike runs good and doesn't come back until start up, any ideas?


Hi Robert, when the ignition switch is turned on, it is normal for the engine light to come on for 3-4 seconds while the engine management system runs a series of self diagnostics. No spark from coil


charge the battery fully it may not have enough charge to start, you could jump start it with a battery or a car but not a running car, they put out 16 volts and will fry the electrics,

Gilera runner 125 st 2008 cuts out by arcing


coil lead plug cap needs replacing , no shield to protect spark plug from getting wet due to weather/water splash. electrical spray lubricant requires from damp start problem

Troubleshooting for laverda motorcycles


Did your bike quit whilst it was running, or is the problem that it won't turn over on the starter when you try to start it?Position 1 of the ignition switch should allow the starter to be operated and the engine to fire up. Position 2 is for parking lights only. The ignition switch can suffer poor internal contacts with age. It may have been replaced with the wrong type of switch if you say it turns over in position 2. Have you checked the fuses? If they are OK, try bypassing the ignition switch completely.If you are running the original ignition, the control box under the tank can fail. Check that there is a spark on all three plugs. THEY ALL MUST BE KEPT EARTHED when turning the engine over to avoid destroying the ignition module.

Theres a plug that runs from the electric start but there is no where to plug it in where do i plug it in its for a atomik thumpstar 125cc motox

Have a 2006 Heritage Softail - Was running when speedometer & odometer quit working and key light came on - not engine light. Stopped at gas station - when down shifted to stop things started working...


Hi Johnrobindan, and the usual suspects are:
1.Ignition/Light Key Switch not in IGNITION position.
2.Engine Stop switch in the OFF position.
3.Discharged battery, loose or corroded connections check negative cable at both ends. (solenoid chatters).
4. Bank Angle Sensor tripped and Ignition/Light Key Switch not cycled to Off and then back to
5. Starter control circuit, relay or solenoid faulty.
6. Electric starter shaft pinion gear not engaging or over-running clutch slipping.

Engine missing/ backfiring, no pulling power


Hi I am vortash sounds to me like an ignition lead short check that the leads on the pot are not sparking to earth effectively cutting off the spark to one cylinder ( electricity takes the shortest point to earth so wont reach the plug if sparking to the cylinder ) I think youll find if it was the Kick stand sensor it wouldnt even fire up .. ? check all your HT circuit for damp or damaged leads .. hope this is of help regrads Vortash

Electrical system acting up at high RPM


halogen headlight taillight/brake light turn signals odo/speedo and horn. Here are the problems… Above about 6000 RPM the ignition will intermittently cut out. It doesn’t do it all the time. The higher the RPM the more it tends to cut out. Reducing RPM brings the lights back to bright. Above about 6000 RPM the lights start to dim intermittently. The higher the RPM the dimmer they get to where the lights almost go out. The engine runs fine if the RPM is reduced. The tachometer records some very high RPMS when the system starts to act up. Max RPM recorded is 19999 which is totally unreasonable. I am looking for some assistance in troubleshooting my electrical system and how to isolate the problem(s).,Start by disconnecting the cables from the generator coils and start up your engine. Problem still there? Do this to find out if your problems stems from the power side or the ignition side. If bike now runs fine, I'd look at the voltage regulator. Have you checked that all your connectors are ok? A grounding problem with a somewhat loose connector would be vibration sensitive, hence the problems at higher rpm. Is your stator plate securely fastened? Is your engine grounded to chassis? There might be a loose fastening in one of you engine mounts. Reply With Quote,,,
