My model MAH5500BWW Neptune does not have a snap ring on the back drum bearing. Is that a problem?

All the videos I watch on bearing replacement show a snap ring being removed from the back bearing on the drum. Mine has no snap ring and there is no groove for a snap ring to fit into. Is this typical? Is it a problem?

SOURCE: Maytag Neptune Model #mah5500BWW We know it a

There are 2 bearings and a seal. To remove inner tub you'll need to use a hammer/mallet or special tools, and you'll need to basically strip the washer to get to the inner tub. Maytag (Whirlpool) does not sell bearings separately, look them up on ebay, use "maytag neptune bearings" as a key phrase. IIRC, the special tool was also available on ebay for lease. Instructions on how to replace bearings are available there also. If no luck on ebay, try googlee for the same key phrase.

Good luck,

Hi I have a Maytag Neptune model MAH5500BWW Serial B4585662GA. When I turn the drum, I can still hear water inside/behind the drum. Thank you

This is normal. There is a balance ring filled with water attached to the inner drum. The balance ring is sealed and is not supposed to be empty. When you turn the inner drum by hand, you're hearing the water settling down from the now upper chambers of the balance ring.

Progressively louder on spin maytag neptune model# MAH5500BWW serial#C8028996LC

You have a bad rear drum bearing ( unfortunantly , so do I ) . This involves removing the inner drum and outer drum . The complete rear of the outer drum , has to be replaced , due to the bearing is already installed in the new one . Very expensive to have done and very time consuming to do yourself . You probably should invest in a different washer . Front load washer manufacturers , have not come up with a way to support the front of an inner drum as well as supporting the rear also . Until this happens , rear bearing problems and excess expense for repair , will continue to be the downfall of front loading washers .

Very loud spin cycle

The link below, courtesy of www.repairclinic.com, shows that the rear bearing comes with the outer tub only and is very pricey! I have been unable to find a service agency that offers just the bearing. Very aggravating. www.maytag.com would be a good place to define your issue.

Grinding noise

The Neptune bearings are an interesting breed... Maytag wants you to replace the whole outer tub which includes the bearings installed for $180 or so. You can replace the bearings yourself. See www.tonytool.com to see how it is done. The tool costs $379 or so... but it is designed for the service tech. not the d.i.y.er. But watching the video can give you an idea of how to do it yourself. The bearings were available on www.neptunewaxmotor.com for about $35.00. You will also need the Maytag seal kit 12002022 to complete the job whether you decide to replace bearings or the outer tub.
