Question about 2001 Yamaha V Star 1100 Classic

1 Answer

Yamaha V-Star 1100 won't fire up

I rode into work in particulary cold weather the other day...it was about 15 degrees. When I tried to leave work the starter would turnover but not fire up but after a short time it was start making a tapping sound and stop trying to start up. The light has full power and I haven't had any trouble before this. Any idea....I gave it a couple days of rest tried again today since it's a warmer day but it still won't fire. It would turn and then switch to the tapping sound.

    I have a similar problem.

The bike was hard to start and I had cranked it 6 to 8 times then it just stopped cranking and I could hear the solenoid clicking.

Thought I had killed the battery so charged it, no different so thought it was a bad battery it, changed it, no difference.

I jumped a cable to the start and the starter turns.

I checked the solenoid and it’s good.

I assume the start protection circuit is good because the starter solenoid is getting power.

Check continuity of the cable from battery to solenoid and solenoid to starter, all good.

    What else is there?

I have a similar problem. I can crank the starter, but the engine won't fire up. I've charged the battery and tested the spark plugs which seem to be firing fine. I'm not very experienced in mechanics so I'm not sure where to look next.

Perhaps part of the same problem, twice last year the starter would stick when I turned the bike over. Nothing I did stopped the starter from winding (kill switch, kickstand out of neutral, etc...). The second time this happened it cranked for a good two minutes before it stopped.

Hi,
Check your battery connections. One or both could be loose or corroded. Most likely loose. You would still have power to your lights but too many amps for the starter to work with loose connection...
