Question about 1994 kawasaki VN 750 Vulcan

1 Answer

Carburator problem I've had my bike (used) for 4 months. I've put 200 miles on it and it ran fine. Two weekends ago it starting sputtering (after I'm in 4th or 5th gear) and acting like it's running out of gas. I have gas, and the bike is strong going thru the gears, then just quits. If I clutch it, the gas picks back up and it'll run, but still sputtering and losing pull. I've checked and cleaned the fuel lines and the on/off/reserve fuel selector. Could I have gotten some trash in the tank that worked its way into on of the carbs? What do I need to do or look for now?

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Offhand would suggest a rebuilt/clean of the carbs. A temporary workaround would be to switch off the fuel petcock, remove the fuel hose, partially drain the carbs and spray into the fuel hose (going into the carbs) injector/carb cleaner. Reinstall fuel hose, turn on fuel. Remove the air filter and start the bike. After warmup, rev while spraying injector/carb cleaner into the opening where the air filter should be. Get a hard paper/board (such as a folder) cut to a size bigger than the air filter but would fit inside the opening of the airbox. Rev/pump the bike slowly building the RPM at about 4~5K suddenly cover the opening (with the board) to fully choke the carbs while maintaining throttle. Before the engine dies, remove the cover. Spray again while revving. Repeat choking/spraying several times. The idea is for the vaccum to draw the clog/blockages.

Pls post back result(s). Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

probably old gas or condensation built up in carb or injectors.if carbureated drain float bowl & if you still have old gas in it drain tank close drain screw/bolt refill with premium fuel add fuel cleaner like b12 chemtool or seafoam(7-10$) to a fresh tank of gas...sometimes i just add the b12 chemtool (3-5$)and run it a few miles and it snaps right back to new!

I assume you are using premium gas. If not you should. Check the plugs. If they are white the bike is running lean.. Make sure the gap is set correctley for your bikes spark plugs. Also check the jet sizes in the carbureator for your modifications and elevation. If the bike was fine and just needed a tune up i would pull the map off and reinstall the stock one.

Nioce bike sounds like a bad injector though.
You could try to remove them one at a time.injector cleaners might ev en help first but find a really good one.
You gotta use the highest octane on that bike also.
Good luck,Gary

Chances are there is a water build up in the carb float bowls. The water comes from condensation in the gas tank. Try draining the carbs. Another possibility is carburetor main jets partially plugged up. You must clean the carbs if plugged jets are found to be the problem. Please rate my answer. Thanks. tombones49_152.gif

Hi
Check/replace inline fuel filter. Put a fuel injector/carb cleaner fluid in the tank and run it through, this will clean any build up that may be in carbs/injectors.
If problem is still persisting then you'll need to get carbs/injectors removed for cleaning and resetting. Hope this helps, let me know how you get on.

22 miles not far enough to keep me from contacting service tech. that worked on it for hire.I'd ckeck the sparkplug wires, make sure they are staying in contact at the plug. The fuel - air system needs to be assembled to work properly.if you are right about the fuel not working properly cleaning fuel system is needed.just putting cleaner in the fuel may not fix trash in system.

Yamaha TW 200 starts but won't run.

If the bike has sat for a long period of time without being run - the gas that is sitting in the carb(s) will shellac.. Then the carb(s) would need to be cleaned and "rebuilt"..

2003 Yumbo Dakar Motorcycle -only 527 miles - will not start!!!

  • Nice looking bike. Yumbo Dakar is not a bike I have ever worked on but I will try to help.Remove the air filter and look into the carb as you twist the throttle. Does the slide open and close as it should? Open the slide and spray starter fluid into the carb bore as the electric starter is used. Not starting? NEXT >
  • Drain the carb just to see that it is filling with gas.
  • Remove the flywheel cover and put a timing light on the bike. Use the starter button and see if the timing marks are on. The CDI could be bad or the cam chain could have jumped.
  • Remove the cylinder head cover. Turn the flywheel to TDC compression. Look at the OHC gear. There should be two marks positioned parallel with the head surface, (or an '0' at the top of the gear and in line with the centerline of the crankshaft). Are the valves in time?

2002 VT1100C2 Intermittent Fuel Starvation

No the fuel pump will not fail more than once. When a fuel pump goes out it just goes. Will not work after that what so ever. Sounds like bad gas lines. I had this problem. I replaced my old gas line after the old one cracked when I did this I cut the new on to long. When I put my tank back on the old one pinched. It would run fine for a few min then sputter and die as the gas in the line ran out. I let it sit for a min and more gas filled the line and would start the process over. Try replacing the fuel lines and make sure they are cut to the right length and do not kink when the tank is on. It could also be a dirty petcock. I had let my bike sit for 6 months while in another state and the gat tank got dirty somehow. I got it running and same problem putters and dies. Neighbor took out the petcock and used an air hose to clean it out and it worked like new.

Since it ran fine before you "fixed" it, go back over the things you changed. Put the old spark plugs back in it. Double check all spark plug wires and ignition connections. Put the bike in a dark area and run it at night, can you see any arcing anywhere?
