Question about Honda Motorcycles

1 Answer

I just purchased a 1980 honda cm400t for a project. I have plans of removing the engine and installing it in a cart I have built, but I decided to try to get the engine running great before I removed it from the frame. The bike is missing most of it components such as speedo, tach, lights, ignition, and ect. All I have is the frame with the wiring. I was wondering, without the ignition and kill switches, how can I get fire to the spark plugs by bypassing all the harness.

Hi, Justin the answer to this question is way above my pay grade for this situation, I would call or visit my local dealer or reputable shop's service/parts department and inquire about any possible quick fix, answers, or parts inquiry.
Good luck and have a wonderful day.

SOURCE: 1980 Honda Cm400a No spark

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Bypassing the kill switch means removing the connection of the black / white wire either at the emergency stop switch (kill/run), ignition switch or preferably at the CDI connector.

Additionally, you can try:

  • start with the side stand up;
  • check/wiggle the 6 wires coming from the stator going to the CDI.

Would appreciate a postback on results / updates.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

SOURCE: 95 model thunderbird, runs great until idle, cuts

The pick-up coils fail sometimes but usually lead to a complete failure
Before just replacing parts u can eliminate some suspects ie kill switch, clutch switch & ignition switch by bridging
Also check that there isnt a spark jumping from an HT lead or plug cap

SOURCE: 2000 honda 1100 shadow spirit. Rough idle, little power.

Replace the spark plug caps and try again. On Honda's the cap is often part of the wire (a dealer part) NGK makes some inexpensive plug caps about $5 each. They should OHM out to 5000 anything above or below and you need to replace them. This should fix the problem.

Find the year serial nimber A9649-548612 club car golf cart was manufactured

Since 1981 Club Car Golf Carts have positioned their serial numbers just under the glove box on the passengers side of the vehicle. The first two numbers (not letters) indicate the last two digits of the year of manufacture.

On Club Car Golf Carts prior to 1981, you can find the serial number by raising the seat and locating the aluminum, I-beam frame section closest to the batteries on the driver's side of the car. If the serial number plate has been removed, you can confirm it is a 1975-1980 model if it has two brake pedals and one accelerator pedal.

Hi, I have a 1980 Honda XR250. The compression is around 120 (with decompression disconnected). It blows smoke and will not rev high - I assumed carb dirty, cleaned it but still reluctant to go to high...

Might be a good idea to check your timing first and then if the timing is ok try removing your exaust pipe and running it for a few minutes without the exaust system installed. I have encountered a couple of bikes where the exaust system has carboned up and will not allow the engine to breathe especially at hiogher rpms. A day in the gunk tank for the exaust pipe did the trick and the bike ran like new. (Gunk will remove all the paint too)

Hi, is the 2001 honda Cl400 based on any other honda, so that I can obtain a service/repair manual written in english?

The basic engine is the same as the CB400T (sport), CM400C (custom), and CM400T (economy/inexpensive, less features) sold in the U.S.. The CL400 (scrambler/high muffler) was never sold in the states. It is too bad It would have been a fun machine. I believe the 79-81 CM400 service manual should cover all the issues you will encounter.

I plan on towing a trailer 2500 ish lbs. Fully loaded behind my 2002 Hyundai Sante Fe with the V6 engine. My ex says I need to get a transmission cooler installed. Do I?

Well, you don't have to have a transmission cooler installed if you go a short distance.

But, it would help if there is none from the factory and you go a long distance on hilly terrain.

My 1980 Suburban had a cooler built in for towing things.

Hope this helps you.

Honda GX390 stalling in go cart

I believe its the the oil sensor. The engines are equipped with a low oil sensor and when you go around turns, accelerate, decelerate, the oil will flow from side to side and throw the sensor off, causing the engine to shut off. Remember, this is because the engine is from a pressure washer and pressure washers arent meant to be driven LOL.
