Question about Harley Davidson XL Sportster 883 Motorcycles

09 883 Sporty goes into gear but wont move. Tried adjusting the clutch but to no avail. Admittedly this happened during a burnout. There is a burnt smell when i removed the clutch inspection plate.

Have tried everything except the expensive trip to the bike shop.

SOURCE: 1100 wierd clutch disengage problem

Bleed your slave cylinder on the sprocket cover and refill the hydraulic fluid. If you have any leaks you will get air in the system and it will not fully disengage the clutch. As for the 750, they have cable clutches and you just need to adjust the slack of the cable.

have you checked the basket for groves? if it is groved the plates will stick the release all of a sudden.

Could be burnt, or scorched clutch discs. DId you check the oil lately? I believe the Madasses have a wet clutch, right? Hope you didn't burn up the whole clutch basket. But you may have. Check the oil now!!!

First replace the clutch,clutch basket,and throw out bearing that has been destroyed,check the cable for damage and if you still have the same problem,Then check the kick stand switch.

Okay, this may take a couple of comments back and forth but I can get you back on the road. First, Have you done any work on the clutch lately? If so, what and why? Did the clutch work okay after the work? Have you changed gearbox oil in the last month or so? If so, EXACTLY what oil did you put in the gearbox? i.e. "10w40 Mobil Super Blue fluid with silicone friction limiters". Just post a comment to get back to me.

85 toyota pickup clutch wont engage


The gear box should be okay. Check the clutch-watch if the clutch fork on the bell housing moves when someone presses the clutch. If it doesn't move, the cable needs adjusting, or if hydraulic clutch diagnose the clutch master and slave cylinders. Either one should cause the clutch fork to move and engage the clutch.

Sounds like your clutch is getting stuck in the disengagement. Follow the clutch cable down and check to see if its moving or stuck.

I changed the bars on my 01 883 sporty. Now the clutch leaver wont engage the clutch. I tried adjusting the cable but no luck. I changed back the bars, but no luck. Any ideas?


I'm not sure what you mean by "engage the clutch". When some people say this, it means the clutch won't disengage the engine from the transmission. Others say it and it means that the clutch will not engage the engine and transmission and make the bike move. It's the same way with the term "backfire". To some that's a pop from the exhaust, to others is a spit back out fo the carburetor.

Now, if you took the handlebars off, you should have only has to move the cable adjuster in the middle of the cable. If you did not change any adjustment at the primary, you should only have to the adjuster in the middle of the cable to worry about. Make sure that the cable housing is seated in the adjusters like it should be. It they are out of the adjusters, it would may your clutch stay in the "pulled in " position and the clutch will not engage the engine and transmission.

Now, when you pull the clutch lever in,you should feel the resistance of the clutch. If not, the there is the possibility that the cable came disconnected in the primary case. This is rare but I have seen it happen before. To fix it, remove the outside derby cover and you should be able to reconnect the cable with the clutch release mechanism in the primary. How do i adjust clutch properly on 2003 sporty


To adjust your clutch on your Sporty, find the cable adjuster in the middle of the clutch cable. Move the cover out of the way, break the locknut loose, and adjust the adjuster inwards to get as much freeplay in the cable as possible.

Now, remove the cover from the clutch release mechanism on the primary cover. Remove the spring and the locknut. Inside you'll see a slotted adjuster screw. Turn the adjuster counterclockwise as far as it will go. Then back up clockwise 1/2 turn. Reinstall the locknut and the spring, then the cover.

Go back to the cable adjuster in the cable and adjust the adjuster outwards until you get about a 1/8" freeplay in the clutch cable. Work the clutch several times and check the freeplay. If correct. lock the locknut and replace the protective boot.

My car wont move when in gear. i can go into 1,2,3,4 gear without using my clutch. cant go into 5th or reverse. now my clutch wont reject back. my friend did a burnout on my car before this happened


Can you pull the pedal back by hand? It's hard to tell what damage has been done without looking at the problem(s), but either the clutch hydraulic system has somehow locked in the 'release' position, or the clutch itself has disintegrated. Best not to let 'friends' abuse your car. Suggest taking the car to a respected service shop and prepare for a fairly large bill.

Sounds like the bike has been doing wheeles and burnouts. As the clutch plates wear the cable needs adjusting. You have reached the end of the actuating cam. New plates are your best bet.

Tranny goes in reverse but wont go into foward gears


how many miles on trans? does fluid smell burnt?350 turbos are good tranneys but they do go bad. in my experance its reverse that goes out first on thies transmissions but thats not saying that it does not happen the other way either. my best guess is you need a rebuild. when you say it tries to move in forward gear that tells me that the clutches are shot. 350 turbos are worth rebuilding. its up to you.
