I'd say the loss of power is due to low back pressure, motorcycle engines especially 2stroke rely on back pressure for performance, backfiring may be due to unburnt fuel igniting in the exhaust or your fuel balance is too rich, hope that helped!

Hi I have a cbr 600 f (99 model) and have just upgraded the downpipes to stainless but after doing so I've lost top end power. If I'm cruising in top gear and open the throttle it will climb t

Genuine Honda exhaust parts are very costly so most owners opt for pattern parts or other non-genuine replacements and nearly all owners report a loss of performance somewhere in the power band.

Your performance loss might be coincidental and the engine should be serviced in order to eliminate that possibility and if there is no improvement it might be possible to restore the former power to some degree by the careful tuning of the fuel system, if carburettors perhaps larger main jets...

If I do full headers and exhaust on my 08 Suzuki gsxr 600, do I need to do additional upgrades

Hello,

Yes, your carbs will have to be tuned to your exhaust - this, usually, means upgrading the needles/seats in your carbs. I bought a Cobra exhaust system for my Suzuki (earlier model) and it came with the upgrade kit for my carbs.

Some people are happy adjusting the jets out further and living with poor fuel mileage, fouling plugs and lousy performance.

Do some research by calling your parts dealer and ask them if they have the carb kit for the exhaust you are wanting to buy. I use one of two online dealers; Bike Bandit or Old Bike Barn

Hope this helps. If you find this information useful, please vote on this post. Thank you.

Backfiring through rear cylinder, 45000 on bike but runs great, no loss of power, just backfiring

Check to see if you have an exhaust leak at the rear cylinder. A slightly leaking exhaust gasket can cause this.

Bike backfire

Yes, it could (and probably is) be an air leak. Check to be sure the carb is tight in the intake manifold, and make sure the hot-start isn't loose and is sealing properly. Also make sure all of the exhaust system joints are tight, an air leak in the exhaust will make a four-stroke pop and backfire like an old work truck with no muffler...
