1. has it been sitting?
2.if yes dump out the old gas and what is premixed since it is possibly old, 2 months max.
3. new prem gas and oil mix.
4.press the comp release when starting , was this pressed when you checked compression?
5.if will not sart try a quick blast of WD-40 in carb or a little gas. WD is flammable and will let you know if fuel related. if it fires for a couple seconds then sparks ok and still has gas problem. try one more time and maybe stuck fuel pump flaps in carb will become unstuck. if it runs on WD or small amount of gas in carb but not otherwise, sparks OK. time to rebuild carb check filter and Gas Line.
As always when playing with gas or other Flammables have a Fire Extinguisher ready for the "Expected". Always expect a fire that way you are calm, VERY important if you have spectators.

017 Stihl chainsaw problem

Could be the spark isn't as strong as you think it is. Could be the spark weakens when the unit is warm. Electronic module ignition needs an energetic pull at the best of times to get a strong enough spark for starting and if it is weaker it would be impossible to pull the starter cord fast enough.
Instead of testing the spark with the standard spark plug try using a spare plug with the gap opened to about 1 to 1.5 mm. The atmosphere in the cylinder during compression is much more dense than in open air and a much stronger spark is needed to jump the gap.

If the spark is satisfactory it could be the crankcase compression that is low, perhaps leaking past the crankshaft seals. If the chainsaw is little used and stands idle for longish periods this could be the problem. Seals tend to lose flexibility quicker under those conditions.

Stihl chainsaw MS460 Can't pull recoil

It could be the recoil is stuck. a couple of things to check. Take the clutch and chain cover off, remove the spark plug and manually try to turn the motor over by turning the clutch. If the motor/engine is not seized, take the pull start/recoil cover off and pull on the cord to see if it will work and that the cord returns back into the recoil automatically. Don't take the nut off the inside of recoil holding the cord spool on. If the engine is not seized, and the recoil now goes in and out by pulling the start cord handle reassemble and pull over the engine a few times. This a good time to check the spark plug is working, now put the spark plug back in and start the engine. It's a good time to clean the air filter as well while the chainsaw is mostly apart and clean all oily sawdust off the chainsaw in the crevices etc..

I have just replaced the spark plug, fuel lines, brand new carby, and new ignition module, but will not start. any thoughts. It is a Stihl FS85 BRUSHCUTTER. Thanks.

I had the same model and always had a hard time getting it to start after taking it to shop it started three times ok then the hard to start all over again. It now is in the trash as I refuse to put any more money into it. Stihl makes a great chainsaw but I would never buy another trimmer or brushcutter from them again.

Stihl 066 does not start. Replaced ignition module. Weak or no spark.

Are the poles on your flywheel blue? Are you using an open-air inline spark tester, or holding the plug against the cylinder and turning it over?

How do you start a STIHL MS460 chainsaw

I am a Stihl mechanic. The proper starting procedure is to set the switch to full choke. Pull the starter rope no more than three times. Now raise the switch up one notch and pull it till it starts. Stihl products will flood if pulled more than three times with the choke on. Thanks, George

Having trouble finding how to start the ms460

Hold the trigger and move the lever on the left all the way down -you know what? if you can't figure out how to start a Pro saw like a 460, you shouldn't be using it at all.
