Charging system

What age is the bike?
older bike will not charge at idle.
you will know if the bike is charging by measuring theu voltage of the battery with the bike and all accessories switched off if it is a new battery it will be above 13V
A dead battery will be about 11V anything under this and it probably will not recover by charging and you will have to buy a new battery.

ok so lets say the battery is holding 12.5 volts if you start the bike and rev it up and it show higher than 12.5 volt your bike is charging note some bike dont charge under 3000rpm.

Masport ride-on LE Mans model. The geen light with battery emblem stays on Auto electrician says this is correct Any comments appreciated

I am no expert in this make of car that you have. Just an opinion thoughThe battery light is usually on the dash to tell us (when it comes on red) that the current flows from our battery to the alternator so we need to check our alternator for damage. First time I hear about a green battery light but I suppose its there to turn red when it should while until then it remains green to tell you that everything charges as it should.Use a volt meter and take a measurement on the battery at idle. you should read 14V +/- 0.5V and that remains at that range even with your high beam headlights on at idle. That means that your battery is charging OK. I hope that helps :)

My Bike Wont Charge The Battery And Need To Know How To Test The Alternator Output?

put a test meter (reading VOLTS DC in the 20V range) across the battery terminals. It should read 12V. Now start the engine. The reading across the battery should be 13-14V or so. If it is any less, then the alternator isn't charging. If it goes up a lot when you rev it then the voltage regulator is faulty. Hope this helps.

Put in a new battery and rode bike couple of timesthen bike does not start up appears dead. please help with advice. david R.

Sounds like the charging system doesn't.

Fully charge the battery, measure its voltage, put it in the bike, start the bike, run the engine at 1,800 to 2,000 RPM. Measure the voltage on the battery (let's say it is 12.2V). If the voltage is not higher than the battery's voltage was before you put it in (12.2V in the sample number I pulled out of thin air, above), the charging system does not work at all. If the voltage is higher than what you measured, but is not 13.8 volts or higher, the charging system seems to work some, but not enough. Perhaps the voltage regulator is malfunctioning, or the alternator has a bad diode.

The battery in my 1981 Yamaha xt 500 runs flat how do I check the magneto or charging system of the bike

You will have to get a digital volt meter,Harbor freight has them for $2.00, other stores like Sears, Radio Shack, any auto parts store will have them for various prices, you just need a cheap one that measures volts. Hook the positive lead up to the positive battery terminal, and the negative lead to the negative terminal, read your battery voltage should be from 11.90 volts to 12. 98 volts. Start the bike and measure the voltage while running, voltage should go up to 13.5 to 14.8 volts. If the voltage goes up the bike is charging, if it stays the same as when it isn't running the bike is not charging.
