Question about 2003 Suzuki RM 250

1 Answer

No power in first and second gear

I have a 1992 RM 250. First and Second gear stalls out before you get to all the power. All the other gears run fine and then first and second run fine untill you kill the bike, and then you do it all over when you start it back up. What could be my problem?

Try adjusting the needle jet on the top of the carb down one setting this will raise the needle when getting in the throttle. Altitude has alot to do with this setting of the needle jet also. UM if this doesnt work try goin up one setting from original if this doesnt work the power valve may be malfunctioning till it gets lose and then works fine till cool down may be sticking.

Second gear is jumpy... only second gear... why?

If by jumpy, you mean it pops out of gear, you likely have internal transmission damage. This is common in second gear as some riders will overrev first and slam second gear, causing damage to the gear dogs in the transmission.

My rm 80 1stand 2nd gear locks wheels

If your rear wheel is locked up in first and second gear with the engine running, this is not a good sign. Have you ever ran the bike without oil in the transmission? Every time I've seen this, the chain was thrown off the bike and it busted the cases. The oil leaked out of the cases and the transmission locks up. Generally, it locks in fifth gear but it could lock up in any or no gear.

Your problem sounds like something is wrong with the low gear-second gear "clutch gear". The clutch gear is gear that slides sideways on one of the transmission shafts to engage the proper gears. If the bike will roll when in neutral, these may be the only gears affected. If the bike will not roll when in neutral, your problem may be in countershaft. Either way, the transmission could be damaged.

Now, if you're talking about the rear wheel locking up if you try to push start the bike, this is because in low and second gear, there isn't enough mechanical advantage in the transmission to overcome the engine compression. Remember, you transferring torque through the transmission backwards when you try to push start the bike. Try starting the bike using third or fourth gear instead. Standing on the pegs and dropping onto the seat when you release the clutch helps.

I have a 01 rm 125. Just overhauled the engine, but when I rode the bike it does not want to go into second gear from first. It stops in neutral and does not want to go into second. Once it is in second...

if all other gears shif fine, only thing possibly wrong is the shifting mechanism, like bent fork, washer on shaft in the wrong spot etc most likely during overhaul, something was not put back in the right place

Shiffting problem

The splines on the shifting rod could be worn or the shift lever itself could be loose causing the bike not to fully shift into gear.

If the problem is not that simple then you will have to go inside the gearbox and see if the shifter forks are worn.

2002 rm 250 smoking

Probably due to a bad crank seal on the clutch side. The extra smoke is from the trans fluid burning through the cylinder.
