Question about 2001 Honda CBR 929 RR Fireblade

Engine problem... I've had my '00 929 fro almost a year. I got it with just under 15000 miles, and have put almost 3000 since I got it. Before me, it had never been down. I laid it down, but did not do much physical damage. Only going 30+ mph. Didn't need to spend much to get riding on it again. Did the 16000 mile tune up a bit late, but after the tune up, everything seemed fine. When I moved to California, I noticed at high speeds(60+), and I hit a bump, or open the throttle quick, it seemed to stall for a spilt second, then all of a sudden jump back to life. One time, the engine stalled but didn't come back right away. I turned it off, back on, and it was fine. A few days ago, I was riding on the freeway and all of a sudden the engine died. Battery still good, just no rpm's. I pulled over a tried to start it back up, but no dice. I haven't been able to get it started since.

Sounds like your clutch is slipping. Make sure your clutch lever has free play of at least a 1/2 inch. Otherwise it is time for a new clutch. Although at 15000 mi it should not need one yet.

I'm looking at buying a 1994 CB250 with 45,000 miles on it. It has been well maintained. Is that mileage a deterrent, in terms of future maintenace costs? Secondly, was this model made in japan, or...

The model plate on the frame neck will tell you where the motorcycle was made. If the bike is really cheap (under $500) and in great shape it is probably a good deal only because most riders only put 2000 or 3000 miles a year. If it lasts 10,000 miles, your can drive it 5 years with out too much trouble. Keep in mind you can probably buy a brand new 250 cc motorcycle for around $4000 new or With low miles for $2000 to $3500. Example : last winter I purchased 2009 Suzuki DR200 with 100 miles on it for $2400 (new $3899). It gets 80 MPG, will comfortably run at 55 mph, and will go on or off road This fall I purchased a 2009 EX250 with 900 miles on it for $2500 ( new would have been $4199). Stock it will do 100 MPH and get around 50 to 55 MPG, regeared it should get 80 MPG. Look hard in the off season to get good deals. Whether your 94 CB 250 is a good deal or not depends on the price you will pay compared to a different low mile used one or a brand new. If you have $4000 to $5000 to spend there are some great deals on 500cc past year, brand new, with warranty motorcycles on the showroom floors. Check it out.

Have a 04 R1150Rt whose transmission has gone out twice within the lst 15000 miles. the first time had to do with clutch plate splines and input shaft, Second event similar to the first. Can move...

Who rebuild the transmission the first time? Was it done at a BMW dealer? Work done by an authorized dealer is warranted for 2 years from date of repair. If work was done by an reputable independent shop, I would think they would at least warranty the labor

If you replaced the input shaft, and clutch disc with the original repair, it is very hard to believe that it has failed again in only 3000 miles. Remove the starter motor on the LHS of the engine/trans and take a look inside.

If you live in the eastern US, you can try Anton. He seems to have a good reputation and is an independent shop.

I have a big twin Harley. I use synthetic oil in the engine. I ride about 14,000 miles per year. I live in WI How often should I change oil.

It really a question about comfortability. Some folks change their oil(s) every 5000 miles (or more), some every 2500/3000 miles and some might do it as often as every 1000 miles. Depending upon the model year of your bike current H-D specifications recommend changing the engine oil, transmission fluid, and primary chain case oils every 5000 miles whether using conventional or synthetic fluids.

Bike is making a knocking noise that sounds like

The tappets in your engine are hydraulic and there is no adjustment to them. As the engine warms up and expands, the tappets expand to maintain zero backlash. I've seen the rollers on the end of the tappets go bad and when they do, it sounds like someone with a sledgehammer in the motor. But, I've never seen one go bad at 3000 miles. The earliest I've seen one go bad is 13K miles.

If I had to guess, with only 3000 miles on a 2001 model bike, I'd guess bad gas. Put some fresh gasoline in the tank and make sure that it contains no more than 10% ethanol.

Good Luck
