Question about 2001 kawasaki VN 800 Vulcan Classic

2001 Kawasaki vulcan 800

When I start the engine the two warning lights (oil pressure and high temp)remain on. I've checked the oil level, water level as wel as the oil filter and oil screen. Visually checked all the wiring and plug in sockets for corrosian.

    Hi again and thank you for your help - its most appreciated



    I followed your instructions with the following results;



    With the engine off and the key on: when I remove only the water sensor wire both warning lights stay on; when I remove only the oil pressure sensor wire both lights go out.



    When I check the water sensor with a ohmmeter (one probe to the sensor one probe to the motorcycle frame and set on the 20k setting) I get a reading of .01; when I do the same test to the oil sensor I get .00.



    What should I replace? Thanks again for your help!

The two switches you are having problems with are thermetically controlled; they can easily short out which will cause the light to stay on. First what I'd like you to do is disconnect them at the sending unit, if the lights still stay on you have a short somewhere deeper in the wiring. Most likely it will be a grounded wire. If the lights do go off you will then want to use an OHM meter to check continuity at the senders. If you get solid resistance then the sending unit is shorted out, if one remains open then isolate the other. You may have a situation that one switch is causing both to stay lit.
Let me know if this helps you out at all. Tell me if you don't have the resources to co the diagnostics as described and I'll be happy to give you a work around. We will just have to be a little creative.
Either way let me know and I'll be happy to help you resolve the issue. I'm inclined to thing your problem is a short not a heat related issue since both sending units are both indicating a problem.

How much oil does a 95 kawasaki vulcan 800 hold


Hi Tom, a 1995 Vulcan takes about 3 & 1/2 quarts of oil & I strongly recommend using Royal Purple Synthetic & genuine Kawasaki filters. You do not have a dipstick but you have a sight glass that is at the bottom of the right side engine cover. Remember to only check the glass with the bike in the fully upright position (have a buddy sit on it) and do not entirely fill the glass. You will see next to the glass an upper & lower level line that cab used as a guide. Overfilling your oil will cause seal damage & on those Vulcan the first seal to go is usually the shifter shaft which costs about $6.00 for the seal but the engine needs to be removed to change it which is big bucks. Also always put in about 3 quarts & then start the bike to fill the new filter and run it for about a minute, turn the bike off & let the oil drain down for about another minute then stand it up & check your level, topping it off with the remaining 1/2 quart. I am sorry you can't find the first and best tool you ever bought for your Kawasaki but despair not, for a mere $15.00 you can download another one. Warning lights not going out


this a 1996 Toyota Hilux??????????
is RPM at 300? or 800,. 300 is bad idle and alt will fail there.
water level, ,
timing belt? (no way on any 96 !!!)
oil level in 1996, ? ahhh you think pressure is level , gotch.
what country is this. ive not seen all 50 country Hilux.s ever.
its not USA car. so?????

check engine RPM
if dash has RPM this is easy, 800 good, lower bad
cold engine RPM is about 1500 and drops to 800 hot.
is this car EFI or CARB, many cars not in USA are carb up to 2001.

  3. List all engine related symptoms, misfire , bogging stalls, and engine shaking or low idle RPM or too high,
  4. check all fuse and report the status of the CEL lamp, key on CEL glows, and running stays off. if not insert the check jumper and read the flash codes, CEL on running means the ECU wants to tell you what and why tests fail.. listen to it or fail.

How do you check oil level in a 2001 kawasaki 800


There is a sight glass in the left engine cover down low. hold the bike level. Oil should be about in the middle of the glass.

Starter spins but doesn't crank over


Instructions
  1. Engine Problems
    • 1 Check the level of fuel in the gas tank if the engine stalls, misfires or will not start. Refill with unleaded gasoline if the fuel tank is empty.
    • 2 Examine the condition of the fuel if the gas tank has adequate levels. Gummy or watery fuel may be contaminated. Take the Vulcan 800 to a mechanic to have the fuel tank drained. Refill with fresh gasoline.
    • 3 Use the choke and try to restart the engine if the weather is cold. Move on to the next step if the engine still won't start or runs improperly.
    • 4 Remove the spark plugs from the Vulcan 800's two cylinders, located underneath the Vulcan's seat and front console: Carefully pull the spark plug cap from each, turning each spark plug counterclockwise with a spark plug wrench, and lift gently from each cylinder.
    • 5 Inspect the electrodes of each spark plug. Clean any carbon buildup with a sandblasting device or high-flash-point solvent and a wire-bristle brush.
    • 6 Replace the plugs with new NGK CR7EA or ND U22ESR-N spark plugs if the electrodes on the original appear burned, white and brittle or cracked.
    • 7 Set the spark plug gap between 0.028 and 0.032 inches. This gap measures the distance inside the hook at the end of the spark plug. To widen this gap, use a spark plug gap tool to pull the hook out gently to the desired gap. To shorten the gap, press the spark plug's hook against a firm, level surface.
    • 8 Restart the engine. If it still won't run properly, take the Vulcan 800 in for repairs.
    Starter Motor
    • 9 Check the engine stop switch located on the left handlebar if the starter motor won't work and the engine won't turn over. If it is in the "OFF" position, switch it to "ON" for regular operation.
    • 10 Check to ensure the clutch lever is pulled in and that the transmission is shifted to neutral.
    • 11 Check the main fuse, located underneath the Vulcan 800's seat near the rear tire. If the connection in the center of the fuse looks burned or broken, replace it with a 30A fuse.
    • 12 Check the battery, located under the Vulcan 800's seat. Unscrew the battery bracket bolts with a wrench, and remove the battery bracket. Remove the battery leads, first disconnecting the lead from the negative terminal and then the positive one. Carefully lift the battery out of its case.
    • 13 Clean any corrosion from the battery terminals using a wire-bristle brush. Clean any debris using a solution of 1 tbsp. of baking soda mixed with 1 cup of water.
    • 14 Charge the battery to 12 volts before reinstallation using a separately powered charger.
    • 15 Reinstall the battery, connecting the lead to the positive terminal first and the lead to the negative cable second. Put a light coat of grease on top of the battery terminal to prevent corrosion, and reinstall the bracket and seat.
    • 16 Operate the electric starter. Take the Vulcan 800 in for repairs if the engine still turns over slowly.
    Overheats
    • 17 Do not idle or operate at extremely low speeds for extended periods of time, as this can cause the engine to overheat.
    • 18 Check the engine oil levels by removing the cap and dipstick from the oil filler, located on the bottom left side of the Vulcan 800. Dry the dipstick with a shop rag, return it to the oil filler and remove it once more. Engine oil levels should be between the "H" and "L" marks on the dipstick. If not, refill with SAE 10W-40 engine oil.
    • 19 Check coolant levels in the reserve tank by situating the Vulcan 800 on a level surface and observing the visible level in the tank's transparent hose. Levels should be between the two marks on the side of the hose. Refill with a solution of distilled water and antifreeze if coolant levels are beneath the lowest mark.
    • 20 Restart the engine and take the Vulcan 800 in for inspection if it continues to overheat.

Oil light and temp light stay on vulcan 800


I bought a 2003 Kawasaki Vulcan 500 with 3000 miles. 7 year old bike, but running good. Had the guy I bought it from ride it 10 miles to my storage garage, then I started learning to ride for the first time. I was doing some practice and tipped it over. Not hard, but I had to pick it up off the ground. Rode for a few more minutes and put it away.

When I showed up to practice again, both the coolant temperature and oil pressure lights stayed on after starting. They were probably on while I was putting the bike away after I dropped it, but I was probably too shaken to notice. Thought it was purely electrical since both came on at the same time. I was thinking it was a shorted temp sensor wire. I rode it for a few minutes since it sounded ok and the engine felt hotter than it should have, so I shut down and looked for more info online. People talked about oil system airlocks, but no one explained why both lights would be on. One person alluded to the idea that both lights would go off if the oil system was fixed, but I couldn't find explanation or confirmation. That was enough to get me to accept that problem as a possibilty.

That's when I saw a trick involving unscrewing the oil filter. Some people on the forum said it wasn't a great idea, but most thought it was fine. i couldn't see any harm in it myself, since I was full on oil and there was from my previous ride, obviously enough oil in the heads to run the engine for another minute or so at least.

So after marking it to make sure of how much to re-tighten, I loosened up the filter using both hands until I could turn it with one, then leveled my bike a tad with a piece of wood under the kickstand (no center stand on these), chocked the rear tire and started the bike, putting it into neutral. I held the handlebar with my left hand to be sure the bike wouldn't tip over on me and loosened the filter until I was pretty sure that the gasket was just separated from the engine and waited for a few seconds. No oil came out immediately so at that point I pretty much figured I was on the right track. Trickle, trickle, GLUG, GLUG. oil comes out into my drain pan. Screwed filter back tight, engine sound changed from smooth to really smooth. I looked back up and both lights were now off. Problem solved.

Apparently this air locking is an occasional problem during oil changes as well as with dropped bikes. People that I read said to fill the oil filter before installing to minimize the chances of this.

Like the previous poster, I really want to know is why the temp light and oil light seem to be connected. Both lights coming on at the same time really tripped up my troubleshooting and almost led to me dismissing the warning. When I get the repair manual I ordered in the mail, I'm going to try intentionally tripping the temp sensor, probably by pulling a wire to see if the warning light for the oil will come on when there is a problem with overheating. Can anyone speculate on why the temp light came on too even though it was an oil problem?

Sorry for the long post, but I looked all over for a solution and had to piece it together from several places and guess a little. Hopefully this is detailed enough to help people with this common (apparently with Kawasakis) problem.

Cant find oil dipstick or spy glass on 03 vulcan 800 classic


on my 1999 vn 800 the site glass is just under the kick stand..you will need some one to hold the bike level while you look at the oil level or stand it next to a wall or something to check the level, they are the same up to the 2005 models..

What immediately distinguishes the Kawasaki Vulcan™ 1500 Classic Fi cruiser from the rest of the well-populated class is that it has the look, feel and sound of a mid-1950s motorcycle. But Kawasaki matches the "look" with a digitally controlled fuel-injection system and high-tech features that result in modern performance. Indeed, response to the Vulcan 1500 Classic Fi was so positive that upon its introduction, Motorcycle Tour & Cruiser magazine dubbed the bike "Cruiser of the Year."
The big 90 cubic-inch V-twin engine in the Classic Fi pumps out plenty of torque and power with high-compression pistons and cam timing taken from the original Vulcan 1500. A Mitsubishi digital fuel-injection system feeds each cylinder a high-octane fuel mixture through twin 36mm throttle bodies. A separate intake tract for each throttle body provides smooth engine operation. The tip of each injector contains four nozzles, with two of those aimed at each intake valve.
Two different systems automatically and accurately control the amount of fuel injected into the cylinders. A 16-bit electronic control unit (ECU) uses readings from sensors that monitor engine coolant temperature, intake air temperature, atmospheric pressure, intake air pressure and throttle position to adjust the amount of fuel injected. The overall result is excellent engine response and power with increased fuel efficiency. The ECU also has a special pin that allows technicians to check the fuel-injection system if needed.
There are four valves per cylinder actuated by single overhead cams. Two valve springs are used on all valves to help ensure tight valve closure, while hydraulic valve lash adjusters automatically maintain valve clearance for smooth engine performance, reduced noise and no maintenance. Automatic cam chain tensioners keep cam timing accurate and provide greater reliability with no upkeep. The right-side crankcase and clutch cover are designed to make it easy to check the engine’s oil level and to perform regularly scheduled maintenance.
The engine produces 85 foot-pounds of torque at 2,500 rpm so that a crack of the throttle punches out smooth acceleration. A gear-driven engine counterbalancer and rubber engine mounts reduce handlebar and floorboard vibration, yet the engine retains its distinctive V-twin rumble.
A long, low-slung chassis provides the classic cruiser look. The Classic Fi’s floorboards are positioned to put the rider in an upright and comfortable position. Also, the brake pedal is designed to make it easier to apply the dual-piston-caliper-equipped brake. Other conveniences include wide, five-way adjustable brake and clutch levers for added rider comfort and self-canceling turn signals for easier use.
An electronic speedometer eliminates the traditional wheel-driven mechanism and its speedometer cable for a cleaner look. The speedometer face atop the five-gallon gas tank features an LED display for the odometer and tripmeter, as well as a clock.

Oil and Heat warning lights stay on after engine start


Have been fighting this problem for 2 weeks .It happened when the bike feel over to the right in the garage. I called Kawasaki and this is what they said .A lot of V-twins get and air lock in the oil system when tipped over. Slide an oil pan under the bike. Then disable the ignition system. spin open the oil filter and crank the engine over until good flow is acheived and slowly spin oil filter shut and oil pressure should come up and all the lights go out. I hope this helps.
