The spedo is electronic and works with a sensor located in the tranny case you can see it right by the starter end its the black plastic thing with a single 3/16 allen bolt in it remove it and make sure it is clean no metal shavings(its a magnetic hall effect sensor) if no shavings exist then you have a problem with the spedo and it can only be replaced harley wont repair them

Speedometer repair

Definitely! When you put a larger or smaller tire it will effect it and so will changing any gear ratios. The speed- o- meter is calibrated for a specific tire size and a certain gear ratio and anything that deviates from that will cause the speed- o- meter to show faster or slower depending on the change. Think if it this way a 16" tire will travel farther in one revolution than a 14" will. Therefore if your car/truck came out with 14" tires and you put 16" tires on it then the speed O meter will show you are traveling slower than what you are. The opposite applies if you downsize. Changing differentials that have a different gear ratio can also affect it. It's a good way to get a speeding ticket. If you put smaller tires on one then the speed- o- meter will show you going faster than you are and it will take more RPM's to reach the same speed, thus causing it to use more fuel.
If you are going to change the tie size or gear ratio very much I would suggest investing in a good Radar Detector! Good luck.

Hi Anonymous, setting up a transmission should be left to a professional, you obviously had an engagement issue which could have been caused by a misadjusted shifter pawl, faulty shifter cam, spacing issue and it's too bad you can't find the very first and best tool you ever bought for your Harley Davidson. Despair not, for a mere $6.50 you may be able to download another one from the website below and good luck. Harley Davidson Manuals Mark Workshop

Where is the speedometer sending unit

The speedometer pickup is located onthe gearbox, it takes it's signal from 4th gear. Here is a link to a forum mentioning it. http://www.v-twinforum.com/forums/harley-davidson-dyna/58979-1995-fxdwg-speedo-incorrect-reading.html

I have a 2000 flht.at 3,000 rpm my speedometer reads 40 mph.any ideas whats wrong,or what can i do?

Hello Galen... The digital speedo on your Harley goes thru a very short start up sequence. If you crank the bike before this sequence is complete, it will often make the speedo register incorrectly. Next time you turn on the ignition, watch the speedo needle, it will make a little ****, once this is done crank the bike. If it reads wrong going down the road, pull over, turn off ignition and crank it again while waiting for the needle.

You can also remove & clean the speedo sensor of debris (on top of the transmission). Sometimes the sensor will pick up small metal particles & cause the speedo to be off.

I hope this helps & good luck with your bike.

My speedometer is off by almost 10 mph. How do i fix this?

HI YOU COULD TRY CHECKING THE GEAR RATIO, AS THE SPEEDO DRIVE IS FITTED TO THE FRONT SPROCKET, ANY CHANGE IN THE MACHINES GEARING IE SMALLER OR LARGER SPROCKETS WILL HAVE AN EFFECT ON THE MACHINES SPEEDOMITER READING, AS WILL A CHANGE IN TYRE SIZE

Most likely you have a bad sensor indicating a speed that is incorrect. Unfortunately you probably need to have it fixed at a shop or learn to know your exact speed from the tach and gear you are in.

I have a used 03 gsxr600 n the speedometer dont work?

Is it electronic or is it mechanical?

I dont know which it is but suspect it is mechanical. Id check for a broken core in the cable.

You can tell almost immediately by looking at the back of the speedo. Is there a thing you can unscrew there? If there is, unscrew it and you can tell if it is mechanical or electric.

Maybe not what you were looking for exactly but I hope it will lead you in the driection you should go.

My 2002 sv650 speedometer gives me incorrect readings, about 30-40% more than the actual speed

the sv runs the speedo from a front wheel speed drive and sometimes the tabs that turn the drive can bend or brake off giving a false reading so i would remove the front wheel and check that the two tabs are in good order and that the wheel drive is aswell.

It could be the size of your front tire. Best readings are obtained when you use 120/70/17
