2006 sportster problems

Engine smokes (blue) when hot. Clunking noise comes from engine when throttled (like it is in too high of gear).

SOURCE: Throttle to engine problem on 1993 Harley 883 Sportster

 You either need to lube the cables, or adjust them. You adjust the throttle to have a 16th to an 8th inch of freeplay with the bars like youre riding straight. You adjust the snap back with the bars fully to the right. As far as the motor shutting off , you need to use the enrichner ( they call it a choke) until it will idle on its own without rapping the throttle.  Also , your idle may be set too low on the carb. The adjustment is made at the idle speed screw , right behind the air cleaner.

Sounds like you have some debri in your throttle cable housing or your return spring ma be hanging up try a general cleaning of all the linkages and maybe some lithium grease in the throttle cable housing. good luck

My Bike emits Bluish Smoke at Start Up and then at Deceleration.


OK, since you didn't mention a make model, year or number of cylinders this is just an old mechanics take on the situation. Blue smoke on deceleration (closing the throttle) is because of high vacuum in the cylinder pulling oil past either the piston rings or valve seals. Usually, blue smoke on a cold start is caused by the valve seals leaking into the cylinder while the bike is sitting. A quick check to see if the piston rings are at fault would be either to come down a long steep hill or accelerate hard then close the throttle, if it emits a sizable amount of blue smoke when you open the throttle again, the rings are most likly at fault.
The oil getting black is it doing it's job of keeping the engine clean, and the oil consumption you mention would not necessarily be cause for concern on an air cooled engine, especially in a warm climate. Is it possible this condition existed before all this work was done? If so, I'd suspect a carburetor problem, an over rich mixture, possibly because of a faulty float valve or the float itself contaminating the oil with raw fuel, especially if the bike is left on the side stand without the petcock being turned off.
To sum things up, a leak down test will show the condition of the rings and valves. Also might mention that if newer type (usually blue or green color) valve stem seals were used, there is a special procedure for installing them not all mechanics are aware of. The valve must be put in the guide first and the seal worked over the stem with the thumb then it can be tapped down onto the guide. Hope some of this helps, Frank

Hi there.
well when you throttle up to about 2000rpm do you get blue smoke coming out the exhaust.When driving on flat road will it power up as normal with out missing or getting hot.
what colour was the old spark plugs were they black or light brown.
When you start engine and run for 3 minutes then let it idle and remove oil filler cap do you get smoke coming out.
Number 1 if yes then engine is lacking power due to piston rings worn answer rebuild engine.
Number2 spark plugs brown [good] if black soot as num1.
Number 3 if you get black smoke or blue ,then the engine is lacking compression could be your problem as num1
OTHER WISE GET YOUR TIMING CHECKED AND SET TO BOOK.

Making More Horsepower

  1. Full throttle only, on hot days, at low rpm. Carburetor is a bit lean in needle seat or main jet. Not too serious. We all have this problem sometimes.
  2. Full throttle only, on hot days, at mid or high rpm. Carburetor is a bit lean in needle seat or main jet. This is more serious. Get on this problem soon.
  3. Happens even while cruising at a constant speed. Carburetion is way too lean, or compression ratio is too high, or the gas you just bought is Tijuana special, cut with #2 diesel. Pull off the road, call for a trailer. This is big time serious.
Black smoke on full throttle acceleration.
Main jet is too rich.
Grey smoke on full throttle acceleration.
Bad valve guide seals, or bad rings. The engine was mis-assembled.
Grey smoke when you start the engine, particularly when cold.

Ticking sound which goes faster and slower as the engine does.
  1. Bad spark plug connection to ignition coil (pray this is it).
  2. Stuck lifter.
  3. Improper valve to valve clearance, or improper valve to piston clearance.
Engine misses at idle or full throttle acceleration.
Bad connection from ignition coils to spark plugs.
Truly crummy gas mileage, as in less than 40 when cruising, or less than 35 around town.
  1. Too much cam duration. You're blowing gas out your exhaust pipes.
  2. Carburetor is way too rich, especially in the midrange.
  3. Accelerator pump on carburetor is adjusted too aggressively.

If you are saying there is no exhaust coming out the tailpipe, you have a blockage in your exhaust. Either the catalytic converter or the muffler has failed closed. Take the car to a muffler shop to diagnose which part needs to be replaced (they will need to break open the exhaust between these components).

could be a rod bearing getting ready to go ,,,....you'll know because the noise will start to get louder the more you drive it.

I have a humming noise on my 2006 rendevous when you start to slow down and then you hear it all the time when you start to accelerate and also a clunking noise when you put it in gear.


The humming noise could be a wheel bearing, as for the clunking noise does it relate to the brakes at all? If it is with the brakes could be caliper/pad clip maybe the problem. If not brake related possibly it could be a motor mount.

Trying to diagnose an internal engine smoke problem, 06 prius was working fine, all of a asudden i hear the gas engine come on and it sounds like valve or rocker noise, very lightly, i go to check the oil...


White smoke coming out of the oil fill cap is not good, it means there's water in there (white smoke = water, blue smoke = oil, black smoke = lots of junk in gas or ruined engine). I suspect bad head gasket or cracked block.
