Question about 1993 Harley Davidson XLH Sportster 883 Hugger
Does the spring plate go behind or in front of snap ring
Posted by Anonymous on
You put the spring plate on first (after putting on all the clutch disks) with it being held in the compressed state. Then you insert the snap ring into the grooves in the center of the clutch. Then you can re leave the pressure of the compressed spring plate. The snap ring is used to keep the spring plate under pressure at all times in normal operation.

I've never really torqued these bolts and I've replaced plenty of the diaphragm springs. Usually I put stronger springs in the clutch since I'm building up the horsepower of the engines. I put a drop of Loctite 242 (med, strength blue) and tighten the bolts to about 25-30 foot pounds. Check the standard torque for a grade five bolt of the size that are in the clutch.

Once you get the nut off the mainshaft, the clutch assembly should slide right off. Undoubtedly, the end of the splined shaft has been damaged or there's some wear on it. It is going to be difficult to see inside the clutch hub to check for a burr or something but this is the best I can tell you. Just keep trying to get it off as best as you can. SOURCE: need to get front fork
You need to turn the fork tube upside down and find the socket head bolt in the hole where the axle goes through the slider. Take the bolt out and the upper fork tube will come out of the slider.
