Question about Harley Davidson XL 1200 C Sportster Custom Motorcycles
Turn signals work, headlight works, N works, oil light works. needle doesnt
Hi Robert, always check your instrument fuse before performing the next procedure, try cleaning your speed sensor located on top of the transmissions right side between the top cover and the chrome starter end cap on Twin Cams and on top of the engine case between the rear cylinder and the starter motor for Sportsters. Remove the the bolt that secures the sensor and pull it out of the transmission. Inspect sensor for obvious damage and repace if necessary. If sensor has no damage then wipe clean any obvious contamination like micro fiberous material with a clean rag and reinstall, torque bolt to 8 ft lbs. Check the rear bulbs. If they are working (brakes+lights) check the wires. For the turn signals, override the flasher relay. If they are coming on then you need to replace the relay. If not then check the left hand side clip on switch.

Gap your plugs to 38 thou. Check all your bulbs (one burned out will affect the rest) Take a look at all your fuses and make sure they are all ok. Otherwise you are probably looking at a wiring short which will require trouble shooting of the elctrical system. Buy your self a service manual for your bike, this will help you a lot.

check the wiring under the rear tire. you probably tore the wires. if that's fine. do your flasher work? if they do then double check the bulbs. if they're fine them it could be the tsm ( turn signal module ) Only consider replacing that if the wiring is fine and the turn signals worked fine before

Look for a bad ground connection inside the headlight shell (or possibly elsewhere). The other thing that all of the items you mention that are working intermittently have in common is the ignition switch. With the switch 'on', check for battery voltage at the fuses for the headlight, turn signals, horn, etc. No voltage at the fuses likely means a bad ignition switch.
